BOWLING.

QUESTIONS FOR THE CENTRE. UNITY OF THE PROVINCE. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, July 3. Momentous matters affecting Taranaki bowling circles will be discussed at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Centre at Stratford to-morrow (Saturday). The Hawera Bowling Club, at its annual meeting expressed its desire in no uncertain voice to continue the Taranaki Centre banner competitions and maintain the unity of the whole province as one centre.

A suggestion that a separate South Taranaki centre should be formed with the object of securing bettei’ representation for the southern end of the province, was received from the Eltham Club. Mr. F. E. Clarke pointed out the advantages of a Taranaki united as compared with a Taranaki divided. Taranaki cricket was divided into two associations, with the result that a good team would never come to play Taranaki because the tw’o ends of the province would never come together to make up a good team. The consequence was that the public did not see the best cricket. If Taranaki bowlers were divided they would never have the strength with the Dominion Council they had now. Mr. J. Foy said the north end had not considered south as it might have done with regard to the visit of the Aucklanders last season. Both tests and two semi-tests were all, played at New Plymouth. The result was that few South Taranaki 'bowlers travelled the distance to play. At least one of the tests should have been played in the south. From this point of view the remit from the Eltham Club would do good by evoking a free discussion, but he was emphatically opposed to the remit. There should be, however, more southern representation on the Centre to consider the allocation of the big matches. Mr. S. Adamson pointed out, with reference to the visit of the Aucklanders, that he was given the opportunity of arranging for a test match in South Taranaki, but he did not think it would have been playing the game with some of the South Taranaki elubs, who would have had very few players in the representative team. As it was the matches arranged at Hawera and Manaia against the Aucklanders gave nearly all South Taranaki players a chance to play.
