The death of Mr. Henry Byron Moore, secretary of the Victorian Racing Club, is announced in a cable from Melbourne. Mr. Moore was over eighty years of age, but was wonderfully active for his years. He was one of Victoria’s best known men, and was held in the highest esteem by all classes in the State.
Miss Eileen Campbell has resigned from her position on* the staff of the preparatory department of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. At last night's meeting the board accepted her resignation with regret, and decided to forward Miss Campbell a letter expressing its appreciation of her services.
Marshal Joffre, French Commander-in-Chief, whose sudden illness was reported yesterday, is suffering from angina pectoris, a peculiarly painful illness, so named from a sense of suffocating contraction oi tightness of the lower part of the chest (states a cablegram from Rome). A London cablegram states that the rumours that Queen Alexandra is critically ill are officially denied.
Sydney reports the death of Mr. J. Birt, a Labourite member of the Legislative Assembly.
A Sydney message says that, in view of his appointment to the Legislative 'Council,* Mr. A. C. Wills has resigned 4iis secretaryship of the Coalminers’ Federation.
A Sydney message reports the death of Mr. James Collier, formerly Parliament ary Librarian at Wellington.
