RED CROSS WORK.

ACTIVITIES OF THE QUARTER. REPORTS FROM BRANCHES. The executive of the North Taranaki council of the Red Cross Society met at New Plymouth last night. Present:— The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) in the chair, Mesdames Patrick, Johnston, Wheatley, Lepper, Messrs. A. B. Gibson, N. Johnston, the Rev. G. H. Gavin, the secretary (Miss Carruthers), and Sister Webster.

The quarterly report dealt with the work which had 'been carried out in the various centres as follows:

New Plymouth.—Weekly classes had been conducted in first-aid. Dr. Slater commenced the lectures, but on having to leave New Plymouth unexpectedly he had arranged with Dr. Rofoerts to complete the course. The class of 30 members, of whom four only were men. took a keen interest in the work. The course would conclude next month, when an examination would be arranged. Public health lectures were given by members of the medical profession on many and varied subjects. These lectures were greatly appreciated by all who had attended. Weekly classes for home nursing had been' held, and this course would also conclude next month. At present 19 families and 34 children were on the visiting list. Lepperton and Waitara mem'bers had generously given supplies of vegetables, which had been distributed and greatly appreciated. Generous supplies of clothes were donated by Urenui members. Tikorangi/—Home nursing classes were conducted at this centre with a membership 24. Lepperton. —Dr. Ban-lay had conducted fortnightly lectures in first-aid, the alternative weeks being devoted to practices. The course concludes this week and arrangements were being made for an examination to be held shortly.

Urenui—Home nursing classes were held regularly, the membership being 25. Regular health talks were given to the school children. The Urenui school now had a junior Red Cross circle, and they were fortunate in having Miss Anderson (headmistress) as a leader. As the result of a concert held recently the school had purchased a first-aid outfit. Eltharn.—The home nursing classes held in this centre were most encour aging, the membership this session being 64 Very keen interest was taken in the work, and Mrs. Avery, a fully qualified nurse, had generously assisted at the practices. Otherwise it would have been impossible to cope with the numbers. Regular weekly talks were given to the senior girls at the public school, and three invalids were visited period Icfllly. Waitara. —The first-aid classes conducted by Dr. Barclay had concluded, and a number of candidates would sit for the examination to be held shortly. It was hoped for the next half-year to arrange a - series of health talks to be given by professional members of the district.

The report was adopted, and arrangements were made for the conducting of home nursing classes for the next six months.

Accounts amounting to about .£3O were passed for payment.
