PIPE BAND CONCERT.
AUSTRALIAN SCOTTISH LADIES. A SPLENDID PERFORMANCE. Typically Caledonian in every respect and characterised by the lively strains and patriotic national sentiment which are always associated with the sons and daughters of Scotland, the concert given in the Workers’ Social Hall, New Plymouth, last night by the members of the Australian Scottish ladies’ world tour band was one' that must have appealed to every member of the audience. It was indeed unfortunate for the company that counter-attractions in other parts of the town were responsible for reducing the house to one that could hardly be called encouraging.
The programme was varied, and included songs 'both solo and concerted, elocutionary item>, pipe and band music, and dancing. Perhaps the best received numbers were the recitations of Drummer Leura Bates, who was recalled again and again. A strong personality combined with good elocutionary power achieved the victory, and in “Wee Scotch Night’’ she was admirable. In another department Piper Jean Madsor showed herself to be a mistress of all variety of patter steps. Piper Flora Ash, Pipe-Sergeant Dolly McPherson, and Drummer Molly Innes were the solo vocalists, who pleased the audience with “Mary of Argyle,” “Home o’ Mine,’’ and “The Girl of the Southern Cross” respectively. Drum-Major William Darwin, F.R.G.S., manager, and the only male member of the party, controlled the pipe band, which played several selections. These were stirring numbers, but were not heard to advantage in the confines of a rather small hall. Mrs. W. Layburn acted as accompanist. The band plays at Inglewood to-night and at New Plymouth again to morrow
