At the annual conference of North Island A. and P. Associations at Palmerston North yesterday, Mr. W. B. Grant, president of the Taranaki Agricultural Society, was re-elected a member of the executive.

Dr. G. Home, of New Plymouth, underwent an operation at Auckland yesterday morning, the surgeon being Dr. Carrick Robertson. The operation was quite successful. Sir Edward Sassoon, head of the wellknown firm of merchants and bankers, left an estate valued at <£488,343, on which the death duties amount to £122,600, states a London cablegram.

Mr. G. A. Buttle, of Auckland, whose death occurred on Monday night at the age of 76 years, was a son of the Rev. George Buttle, one of the early Methodist missionaries who was stationed at New Plymouth at one time. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, who has been indisposed for several days, entered a private hospital on Wednesday. He will not be present at the opening of Parliament, but ifi expected to take his place in the House at an early date, states a Press Association message.

Messrs. Mason and Angus, of the New Zealand railway service, have arrived in England after inspecting the systems of South and East Africa, Egypt, Italy and France (states a London cable). They are now undertaking a thorough investigation of the British system.

The Rev. 11. R. G. Gillespie, (M.A., 8.D., vicar of Helensvilie, has been appointed to succeed the Rev. A. H. Coleman in the charge of the Okato parochial district. Mr, Gillespie is a Trinity College (Dublin) man, and has been in his present charge &ome two or three vears.

At a meeting of directors of the New Zealand and South Sans Exhibition Co., Mr. .1. G. Maclnnes, who is at present on the staff’ of the Christchurch Press, and who was formerly a member of the reporting stall o\f the Otago Daily Times, was appointed to the position of publicity officer.—Press Association.
