TURF TOPICS.
(By “Moturoa.”) Napier Steeplechase to-day. • 'Wellington entries close on Tuesday. Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday. Many Colours should run well at Greeiimeadows. Basham has been doing great work on the tracks lately. The first time they back Nukumai it will bo hard to beat. Mahia failed at Wanganui, but looks like paying expenses at Greenmeadows or Hastings. Megan is fancied for flat races at Napier, but Duo would only require to •be himself to make the crowd look cheap. Sports were surprised to see the name of Serene (9st.) amongst the acceptors for the Settlers’ Hack Handicap at Napier. This is an error. The horse entered was Serenade. Carawock is a slovenly jumper, (but he would only require to got round at Napier to be in the money. Eerie fences well in private, but her exhibition at Waverley was patchy. Owners of horses with pretentions to Grand National honours should note that entries for the two big jumping events and the IVinter Cup close on Friday next. le there another Lochson in Taranaki? It is doubtful. They were talking about the draw fol' positions at the barrier the other day when the office taimourist remarked that being “drawn out wide” at the (barrier was not nearly so bad as being “boxed in” at the finish. Gloaming is booked for another trip to Sydney, and accommodation has been booked for the champion on the Ulimaroa, leaving Wellington on Friday next. Gloaming is easily the most travelled horse in Australasia, and, like Crown Pearl, Royal Arms, and others, appears to be (benefited by sea trips. Aussie scribes were not enthusiastic about Jack O’Shea’s handling of Te Kara in the King’s Plate at Brisbane, but the distance, a mile and a quarter, was not Te Kara’s best, and the New Zealander did well to finish close up third, the race being run in 2min. ssec. —a record for Queensland. Two days later Te Kara was saddled up for the Brisbane Cup, two miles, and although meeting his opponents on worse terms, ran in an easy winner in 3min, 28sec. A comparison (between the two performances is hardly reasonable, but of course somebody has to shoulder the blame. THE ENGLISH TURF. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 17.
The Royal Hunt Cup resulted: — Cockpit L Polyphonies 2, Priory Park 3. Thirty started. IWon by three lengths.
