ROUGH PASSAGE.

FERRY BOAT BUFFETED. THE MARA®OA’B D93C TRIP, BAD WEATHER ALL THE WAY. By TelegruiTh.—AMOciatlosi. Christchurch, June IS. The ferry steamer Mararoa, which left Wellington at 7.®5 p.m. on Saturday, only arrived at Lyttelton at 0.30 this morning, one of the longest trips on record. The delay was caused by heavy seas and a gale. Sometimes the vessel made but two knots an hour, the weather being dirty and squally. Interviewed on his arrival, the master of the Mararoa, Captain Sewell, said a southerly gale sprang up at Wellington at 6 p.m. on Saturday and the full force was felt as the vessel reached the Heads.

“We signalled Penoarrow Heads at 8.40 on Saturday night and the Kaikouras at 10.30 fast night,” he added. “That means we took 25% hours for 85 miles. The weather was bad the whoie way down to Lyttelton, and the ship kept, plugging at it all the trip.” The captain added that it was the worst trip he had experienced on the ferry service. Terrible seas were encountered. STORM AT WELLINGTON. DAMAGE’ TO SEA WALL. Wellington, Last Night. Yesterday’s southerly was much worse than the preceding one last week as far as the wind was concerned, but the rainfall was not exceptionally heavy. The return for the month, however, so far is 5.47 inches, which is more than the average for the whole month. The wall along the railway line to Petone was broken in several places, and at Bastbourne on the opposite side of the harbour much erosion again took place on the beach. The weather bureau is optimistic and does not expect much more rain. It is thought probable that a spell of bright weatheff will follow this wintry outburst.
