ENTERTAINMENTS. EVERYBODY’S. “IDLE TONGUES” TO-NIGHT. Heralded as one of the season’s most entertaining pictures, “Idle Tongues,” a !• irst National feature, opens a threenight season at Everybody’s Theatre tonight. The story is an adaptation from Joseph C. Lincoln’s novel of New Zealand life. “Dr. Nye” and hinges upon a battle of love against small town gossip. Percy Marmont and Doris Kenyon hold the leading roles, with the inimitable Claude Gillingwater at the head of the supporting cast. Mr. Marmont, who will be remembered for his part in “If Winter Comes,” gives a convincing and sincere interpretation of a village physician. His work and that of Miss Kenyon as “Katherine Minot,” his sweetheart, is far above the ordinary, and has much to do with the success of the picture. Rare character bits arc* supplied *by the “gossips.” A two-reel Mermaid comedy, scenic and topical are the supports. Box plans for the season arc now open at Collier’s, or by ’phone at theatre. THE PEOPLE’S. HENRY LAWSON’S “JOE.” " Beaumont Smith’s latest Australian production, “Joe.” based on Henry Law son’s famous story, with Arthur Tauchert in the title mle, is heading the new programme at the People’s Theatre tonight and to-morrow. “Joe” is just a typical colonial man who marries a happy colonial girl and takes up farm life, in which sphere lie achieves success after many years of hardship. Interwoven with their romance is another lore story that does not run smoothly. Many incidents are laid in the Australian bush, while others gives an excellent portrayal of city life, including the magnificent Sydney cabaret, “The Ambassadors.” “Joe” represents a marked advance in the Australian picture industry. and should be seen by all who appreciate a diverting comedy-drama. Hawera, May 13. The Wednesday competition was continued to-day. The match between Tokaora and Normanby was played at Norqianby and ended in a draw. Both teams settled down to hard forward play, with the Normanby backs attempting an occasional passing rush. The greasy ball, however, prevented much passing being done. Howie scored for Normanby in the first spell and C. Griffin scored for Tokaora in the second spell, the game ending 3 all. Mr. Hurley refereed. CITY 7 A DEFEAT WAIMATE. City A had an overwhelming win over Waimate at Hawera by 20 points to 6. The game was fast and play was chiefly confined to the forwards, but City A were obviously superior. Waimate played with 13 men. Tries were scored for City A by Hands, Foster (3), Hall and Matheson, and Foster converted one of the tries. Ruru Sam scored two tries for Waimate. Mr. Baker refereed. CITY B BEATEN. Playing at Ohangai, the home team defeated City B by II points to 9. Play was straggling and there were few back movements. For Ohangai tries were scored by Millan and Gardner (2), Lee converting Millan’s try. Harrison, Lay and Hart each scored for City B. Hart missed three kicks at goal, two being fairly difficult and one right in front of the posts. Mr. Arnold refereed. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. HAWERA GAMES POSTPONED. Owing to the Hawera races being held on Saturday, it has been decided to postpone the Hawera-Inglewood senior match, which was set down for decision at Hawera on Saturday. This match will be played on a date to be arranged later. All South Taranaki junior fixtures will also be postponed. All other senior matches will be played as set down. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY.
