HAWERA NEWS.

DEATH OF THE PREMIER. SHOPS CLOSE THIS AFTERNOON. (•From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, May 13. All places oi business will be closed in Hawera to-morrow afternoon on the occasion of the funeral of the late Mr. Massey. Residents in town and country arc also asked to cease all forms of activity for ten minutes from one o’clock. The message from the aeting-Premier (Sir Francis Bell) asking citizens to cloise all day on Thursday was not received until this morning. In the meantime it had been decided to ask business people to close at noon, and it was too late to change this decision to-day. Had the Government’s request been received earlier it would have been adhered to. HAWERA DISTRICT SCHOOL. CELEBRATION OF JUBILEE. The most important event in the life of the Hawera District School will be celebrated on Friday, when the jubilee of the opening of the school will be commemorated. There will be a social followed by a dance in -the Winter Show buildings, commencing at 8 p.m., to which a general invitation is given. During the day old teachers and scholars and visitors will be received at the school. PLUNKET SOCIETY. J MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday. The president of the Rotary Club (Dt. Thomson) and Messrs Bone and Dixon waited on the committee in connection with the building fund campaign. The committee was most to get the debt paid oft' the new rooms, which were quite an acquisition and a credit to Hawera and the surrounding district. The Rotary Club came prepared to co-operate with the committee in collecting the £4OO to pay for the rooms and their furnishing, and had, in fact, already collected £lOl Is 6d towards this. Arrangements were made so that each member of the Rotary Club would be ready to assist the committee in the work of canvassing, and members of the committee felt that all would willingly respond to this good cause. Arrangements were also made to run the usual hoop-la stand and collections during the coming Winter Show. A special effort was necessary on account of the society being unable to hold its annual fete last February because of the epidemic oi infantile paialysis.
