GRAVE INCIDENT.
SHOT AT BRITISH HOUSEBOAT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received May 13, 11.5 p.m. Peking, May 18. In connection with the Chinese gunboat firing on a British houseboat at Shanghai, the Consul-General yesterday pointed out to the admiral that owing to the gravity of the offence it was impossible then to accept an apology. He must first be satisfied that the guilty officer had been adequately punished, and the question of compensation must be considered later.
