Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Jones, of Awakino, are on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr. C. E. Bellringer was re-elected chairman of the New Plymouth Harbour Board yesterday. A London cable reports the death of Mr. Isidore Spielman, the well-known organiser of art exhibitions. A Dunedin telegram reports the death of the. Rev. Robert Fairmaid, aged 65, a Presbyterian minister, whose last charge prior to his retirement from ill-health was South Dunedin. The death occurred at Johnsonville on Saturday of Mrs. Taplin, relict of the late Samuel Taplin and daughter of the late Captain Kells, of the 65th Regiment. Her husband was in business at Patea for many years, and had many friends in New Plymouth. An Auckland message reports the death of Mr. Edward Frederick Chandler, founder of the advertising firm of Chandler, Ltd. He was born in Chicago 65 years ago. He was a man of outstanding personality. He spent his whole life in the advertising business.
The greatest age reached by any New Zealand Premier was attained by Sir George Grey, who was eighty-six when he died in London. The youngest was Mr. Ballance, who died at fifty-four. Taking the deceased Premiers in their order, their ages were as follow: —Mr. Fitzgerald, 78; Mr. Sewell, —Sir William Fox, 81; Sir Edward Stafford, 81; Mr. Alfred Domett, 76; Sir Frederick Whitaker, 79; Sir Frederick Weld, 68; Mr. Waterhouse, —; Sir Julius Vogel, 64; Dr. Pollen, —; Sir Harry Atkinson, 61; Sir George Grey, 86; Sir John Hall, 83; Mr. Ballance, 54; Mr. Seddon, 61; and Mr. Massey, 69.
