SPORTING.

THE EGMONT MEETING. WEDNESDAY AND SATURDAY. GOOD FIELDS ASSURED. (By “Moturoa.”) Owing to the death of the Prime Minister (Mr. W. F. Massey), the second day of the Egmont races will take place on Saturday instead of on Thursday (the day of Mr. Massey’s funeral). The first day’s gathering will take place to-morrow as originally fixed. The acceptances received on Friday evening for the first day were very satisfactory, and excellent sport should be provided in steeplechase, hurdle, and fiat events. The acceptors Include a strong Taranaki division, as well as representatives of Auckland, Wanganui, Hastings, Masterton, Bulls and Palmerston stables, and the jumping races* promise to be a feature of the meeting. The Egmont Steeplechase, two miles find a half, has attracted a nice field of ten, including well-known ’chasers like >an torte, Puwhero. Explorer. Buckeye, Dick. First Line, and others, while fourteen have been paid up for in the Hack Steeplechase, two miles, ami amongst the number in the minor event are Bonibrook. Hautawa, Active, Paraoa, White Ranger, and Birkenella. The hurdlers engaged at the meeting are a regular Grand National crowd, and include Lochson, Nukumai, Vagabond. Puwhero. Omahu, Alteration, Comedy Prince, Glen Canny, etc. The Tongahoe Hurdles field number eighteen, and is probably the best collection of hurdle horses gathered together at any meeting ever held in the province. The open flat handicaps have all drawn good fields, nine remaining in the Mcßae Memorial Handicap, and eleven in the Flying Handicap, while fields of 21 and 10 are carded for the Telegraph Handicap and Tawhiti Hack Handicap respectively. The Hawera racecourse is in good order for this week’s racing, and the prospects for the meeting are very bright. A good team of horses from Bulls will be seen under silk at Hawera. They will be railed through to-day, and a useful crowd include Omahu, Adrienne. Bonny Rill, Equalise, Bonibrook. and Euphonium. Anticipate, which still has a cold, has not been paid up for. Hipo will have another shot at a ten furlong race at Hawera, and one thing in his favour is that the company is becoming weaker each time. Imperial Spark beat a fair lot at Feilding, and should go well under 7.11. Some speedy sprinters will line up for tilt Flying Hartdicap, amongst the number being Dan Quin, Rafa, Pouma, and Lady Bentinck. The last-named has been unlucky of late, but both she and Pouma may be expected to keep the top weights doing their best at Hawera. Bonibrook has been schooling in good style lately, and should go well in hack steeplechases this winter. Most of the heavily-weighted division in the Tongahoe Hurdles will be in need of a gallop. Comedy Prince, who won at. Awapuni, may strip as fit as anything amongst the lesser weights. GLOAMING. HIS WONDERFUL RECORD. The following is a complete record of Gloaming’s winnings. He has always been in the money except on one occasion. that at Trentham. where he got hung up a the barrier and fell. The record of performances is as follows: Starts. Wins. Seconds. Thirds. In addition Gloaming has raced against the best horses in Australia and New Zealand, and, although he has had several easy races, lie has taken on all the cracks. Gloaming’s winnings to date are £40,942, which is an Australasian record. the next best being Eurythmic’s £36,891, gained in 47 starts for 30| wins. 6 seconds and 4 thirds, and he was unplaced in three races.

Gloaming holds one Australasian record: that.for fxuir furlongs in 45sec (at Trentham), and as half-mile races are now banned, he will keep that record for ail time. The Hawk, on the other hand, holds two Australasian records, the first jointly with Chimera, both running 6fur in Imin 9 4-ssec —The Hawk at Trentham and Chimera at Riccarton —and a couple of months ago The Hawk lowered the mile record to Imin 36Jsec. The Hawk's record reads: 24 firsts, 8 seconds, 10 thirds, 19 times unplaced. Stakes won: £23,000, of which £16,500 is credited to Mr. J. 51. Cameron —another bargain of the turf, for he purchased The Hawk for £7OO from the Douglas estate.

Various accounts have been circulated regarding the price paid by Mr. J. M. Cameron for The Hawk when he bought the Martian gelding at Hawera in February, 1923. Anent the matter, a correspondent writes: —“I am in a position to state that the price paid for The Hawk was £7OO. not guineas,, and the condition attached to the sale was that if he started in the Egmont Stakes, Hawera Stakes, and Jackson Stakes, a certain percentage of the stakes won had H> be paid to the sellers. As history shoves, he ran second in the Egmont Stakes, but did not start in the Jackson Stakes; consequently the executors of the Douglas estate received a bit in advance of the £7OO that was disbursed by Mr. Cameron in the first instance, to secure the gelding.” A FINE RECORD. By winning the All Aged Stakes at the A.J.C. meeting, The Hawk added to his fame and to the bank roll of J. M. Cameron, the New Zealander who is sojourning so profitably in the Commonwealth. So far The Hawk has contested 6.1 races, and the following is his record:—

Bought as a yearling, The Hawk has non £23.000 in stakes. The Hawk, in his * younger days, was rather unfortunate, but he took on all classes, from weight-for age to sprint handicaps, and while he won the Manawatu Stakes, Hawke’s Bay Stakes, Hawke’s Bay Guineas, Waterloo Stakes (at Trentham), Jockey Club Handicap (at Riccarton), Islington Plate (at Ellerslie). and Hawera Stakes, lie had to be content with minor placings in such valuable events as the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes (second to Mermin), Great Northern Foal Stakes (second to Mermin), Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes (third to Absurdum and Tamatete), Wanganui Guineas (third to Tamatete and Thespian), N.Z. Derby Stakes (second to Winning Hit), G. G. Stead Memorial Cup (third to Winning Hit and Amythas), A.R.C. Railway Handicap (third to Silver Link and Anomaly), Great Northern Derby (third to Winning Hit and Thespian), C.J.C Stewards’ Handicap (third to Glentruin and Limelight), Feilding Stages (third to Rational and Epitaph), and Egmont Stakes (second to Tamatete)
