ORDER OF ODDFELLOWS. GRAND MASTER WELCOMED. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, April 14. A cordial welcome to Hawera was extended to Bro. A. G. Shrimpton, of Nelson, Grand Master of the New Zealand branch of the Manchester Unity 1.0.0. F., at a function at the Oddfellows’ Hall last night, when representatives from the various lodges throughout South Taranaki attended. Bro. D. H. Briggs, N.G., was in the chair, and. in welcoming the Grand Master, briefly outlined Bro. Shrimpton’s active connection with the unity during the past 34 years. Besides taking a prominent part in the work of the unity, Bro. Shrimpton had taken an active interest in sport, and had represented South Canterbury and Nelson in Rugby football. A civic welcome was extended Iby Mr. E. Morrissey, deputy-Mayor, who apologised for the absence of the Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone), and expressed the hope that Bro. Shrimpton would carry arway pleasant memories of Hawera. In the course of his reply the guest of the evening delivered an inspiring address dealing with matters of particular interest to the members of the unity. He said that, frank though it might seem to say so, he was not satisfied -with the progress made by the unity in the Taranaki district. At the present day it stood in practically the, same position that it occupied in 1906, and it appeared that the members wore net putting their best efforts into the work. Taranaki was a wonderful district. but unless the members removed from their ranks all thoughts of bitterness they could not hope to progress. Addresses were also delivered by the district officers and past grands, and the whole programme was interspersed with excellent musical and elocutionary it“ins•given by Messrs. R. Vivian, D. If. Briggs. FI. N. Lester, XV. G. Simpson, ft, Hessell, ami M. R. .tones. McDonald's oiehestra gave a number of pleasing selections and played for the dance, which concluded a very successful evening ' 'GENERAL. A mixed team of half a dozen members of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club visited Patea for tthe sports there yesterday, and competed with marked success. H. Stenning won the mile cycle race and dead-heated with Erickson (M’anganui), the West Coast champion, for first in the two miles, while T. Lay won the three miles. C. Bailey, off scratch, ran second in the mile, and G. Collins was second in the consolation race. In the relay race, which was run off scratch, Hawera (Bailey, Collins, C. Shore and T. Lay) won from Wanganui and Patea.
