TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP. SAUNDERS WINS AGAIN. F. E. QUIN RUNNER-UP. Imlay Saunders, of Wanganui, again annexed the Taranaki amateur golf championship at the Easter tournament conducted by the New Plymouth Golf Club at Waiwakaiho, when yesterday morning he defeated last year’s runnerup, H. P. Dale, of Eltham, in the semifinal, and in the afternoon defeated F. E. Quin, of New Plymouth, in the final. These matches, a medal handicap and a bogey handicap brought to a close one of the most successful tournaments held at Waiwakaiho.

For the semi-finals in the morning conditions were excellent and .two very keen contests were witnessed, Saunders defeating Dale by only one up at the nineteenth, while F. E. Quin defeated J. Harold (the ex-ehampion) after being all square on the seventeenth by one up on the eighteenth. Saunders played a splendid iron in his game with Dale, but could not place the line of his putts. On many of the greens he took three putts before he holed out. In forcing the pace Dale was several times short, but he made up for this on the green. He went out in 39 Saunders taking 44 At the eighteenth, Dale was on the far edge of the green for three and Saunders for four. Saunders holed a difficult putt and halved, and then took the nineteenth for a four. The home cards read: Saunders 39 and Dale 40.

Quin and Harold, both playing good golf, were all square at the turn and the holes fell evenly on the home run. All square at the seventeenth they were both short but well on the fairway with their tee shots for the eighteenth. Quin got on to the green with his third but Harold struck trouble. A pretty mashie shot from below the edge of the green trickled into the hole for six, leaving Quin two putts to win and three to halve. He ran past the hole with his first but took the match one up. played in the -morning, was won by O. FINAL OF CHAMPIONSHIP. Saunders and Quin met in the final in the afternoon. Saunders won the toss and hit his first ball out of bounds. Quin hit a good one and Saunders’ second was well down the fairway, but his approach went through and Quin, pitching a nice mashie on to the green, holed out his putt and led 1 up. Quin sliced his drive into the rough at the second, but both were just short with their seconds. Both chipped up well but Saunders missed bis putt, leaving Quin 2 up. Both were on the green at the third with their tee shots and. halved the hole in 3.

Quin’s tee shot at the fourth went high and he duffed his second. He reached the green in four to Saunders’ three, and both taking two putts, Saunders reduced, the lead to 1 up. Saunders’ drive at the fifth the better. Quin’s approach was short and Sauuders’ was just through. Quin ehipped up too strongly, but a missed putt by his opponent allowed him to halve the hole.

A beautiful drive and an iron left Saunders just short of the green at the sixth and Quin, who got into the rough at the right, took four to reach the green and allowed. Saunders to win the hole 5 to 6 and square the game. Saunders was on the green and Quin just short with their respective tee shots at the seventh. Quin chipped up nicely and his putt stymied Saunders, who negotiated it brilliantly with a niblick. Saunders was then 1 up. Both drove long balls at the eighth. Saunders was in the rough but recovered well. Quin made a weak approach and the hole was halved in six.

■Quin topped his drive at the ninth and put his second out of bounds. Saunders, playing a beautiful four, had no difficulty in winning the hole, leaving hini 2 up at the turn. Both were on the edge of the green at the tenth and halved the hole in four.

Both hit good balls at the eleventh and were nicely on in three, but weak putting by Quin allowed Saunders to increase his lead to 3 tip. Saunders was nicely on and Quin just short at “Moses,” but Qtrin, approaching well, halved the hole in three. Quin topped his drive at the thirteenth, played his third from the tee, put his fourth in the bunker, and then gave up the hole to Saunders, who was on the edge of the green, for three. Quin was just on and Saunders was short with their tee shots at the fourteenth. Saunders chipped up well. Quin just failed to sink a putt for a two and the, hole was halved in three, making Saunders dormy 4. Saunders topped his drive ami put his fourth in the bunker at the next hole, and Quin, playing sound golf, had no trouble in winning with a five, making the score dormy 3. Both put good balls at the “Dell,” though Saunders was rather lucky in bouncing off the bunker. Saunders was down in three and won the match and the championship, 3 up and - to play. OTHER GAMES.
