DOG TRIALS.
PIOPIO MEETING. YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. (By Wire —Special Reporter.) Te Kuiti, Last Night. The King Country Collie Club’s eighth annual trials were brought to a successful conclusion to-day in ideal weather and before a large and representative attendance'.
In the short head some splendid work was shown, particularly at the Maltese Cross, a difficult feature. In the huntaiyay- the work was somewhat disap-i pointing, the sheep proving very stunborn, and most dogs losing them on the flat. The competitors were very pleased with the location of the trials. The course, which is on Mr. Coates’ farm, immediately behind the saleyards, is sufficiently tricky to test the skill of shepherds and their dogs. A feature of the trials was the splendid showing of comparatively young shepherds. An eighteen-year-old lad, W. D. Neal, was second in the huntaway, while a young shepherdess, Miss Long, Kopaki, made an extremely good showing, in both huiitaways and was specially commended by the judges, Messrs. Stewart and Sutherland, of Te Kuiti. In the last event Mawson’s Help did some splendid work, hut failed to qualify for points through missing the first set of hurdles. 1
As on the first day, the officials all worked well and the trials finished well to time. Details:— CLASS II. —Short head, drive -Maltese Cross, yard. (Maximum 52 points).
