BUILDING ACTIVITY.
NEW PLYMOUTH PROGRESS. THREE STOREY STRUCTURE. OFFICES OR WAREHOUSE. The erection of a three-storey ferroconcrete building in King Street immediately below Messrs. J. B. Mac Ewen’s premises has three-fold interest in that it furnishes further evidence of the expansion of New Plymouth, it will further improve the appearance of the business area of the town, and it will provide up-to-date accommodation for any business that requires only office room. The new (building is being erected for Mr. Thos. H. Bates and has the additional merit that, if desired, it can be used as a warehouse. The building will have a frontage of 23 feet to King Street and a depth of 49 feet, the western side facing on to a right-of-way. With practically an all-glaas frontage and with a plentiful supply of windows looking out on to the right-of-way, the new structure will therefore be very well lighted, a feature that will also apply to the basement. The basement will be about half above the ground level and in the intervening space between the ground level and the ground there will also be a number of windows. Being of ferro-concrete with all steel sashes, the building will be absolutely fireproof. The contractors are Messrs. J. T. Julian and Sons, Ltd., and they are now at work on the foundations which, like ■those of the adjacent theatre, will go down to the shingle of the old beach level. The new premises are to be known as the “Empire Buildings.”
