TROUBLE TUNIS.
INDEPENDENCE SOUGHT. MOVEMENT AGAINST FRANCE. INVESTIGATION LIKELY. Bj Telegraph—Press Assn.--Copyright. Received Nov. 28, 7.30 p.m. London, Nov. 27. The Paris correspendent of. The Times reports that a disquieting situation has arisen in the French protectorate of Tunis. It is now admitted that a young Tunisian movement. is taking <leI finite shape, and with Communist en- ' couragenient is assuming the character of a Nationalist demand for independence. M. Lucien St. French, the ResidentGeneral in Tunis, has come to Paris specially to discuss the situation, and he has had a lengthy conference wix~ the Premier (M. Herriot). Secrecy i.s maintained, but it is understood that M. Herriot has ordered an official inquiry into affairs in Tunis. Tunis, a French protectorate; in North Africa, extends about 550 miles; along the Meditteranean Sea between Algeria and Tripoli. Its area is 45,000 square miles, and the population comprises mostly Bedouin Arabs and Kabyles.
