STRATFORD NEWS.

A FLORAL BAZAAR ANGLICAN CHURCH EFFORT. (From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, Nov. 21. Never has the Stratford Town Hall presented so bright and cheerful an aspect as it did this afternoon, when the doors were thrown open to the public on the occasion of the grand floral bazaar held in connection with the Holy Trinity Church. Great pains and considerable time must have been devoted to the erection of the numerous stalls, each of which was profusely decorated in a. mass of artificial flowers. A large crowd of people thronged the aisles between the stalls, and business was brisk all the afternoon. The stall-holders were: Floral stall, Misses Johnson and Copping; girls’ guild stall, Miss Kayll and helpers; apron stall, Mesdames Alger, Moore and Hall; children’s stall, Mesdames Sayers and Childs; guild work stall, Mesdames Kayll, Carryer and Rutherfurd; produce stall, Mr. W. C. Judd and members of the men’s committee; cake stall, Mesdames Burke, Jenkins and Fryday; bag stall, Mesdames Good and Dickson; sweet stall, Mesdames Rowe and Fisher; doll stall, Mrs. Budge; handkerchief and fancy stall, Mesdames Furrie and Judd; work stall, Mesdames Sanderson and Rudkin; Toko stall, Mesdames Were.. Marfell. Maunsell and other helpers; book stall, Mrs. Middleton; tea and supper rooms. Mesdames Martin, Davis, Tichbon and helpers. A number of decorative competitions were held under the supervision of Mr. C. Leighton. The judge (Dr. Doris Gordon) awarded the prizes as follows:—• Ladies’ decorated table.—Mrs. Jeffries 1, Miss Kayll 2, Miss Thomson 3. Bowl of flowers. —Mrs. Pinhey 1, Mrs. Marfell 2. Vase of flowers.—Miss B. Masters 1, Mrs. Pinhey 2. Children's competitions.—Buttonholes, Miss T. Pinhey 1, Miss I. Thomson 2, Miss L. Cropton 3; special prizes, A. Davidson, M. Coward, W. Trotter. Bowl of flowers, C. Pettigrew 1, W. Judd 2; vase of flowers, J. Ward 1, Joan Ward 2, C. Pettigrew 3, and M. Smart highly commended. The Rev. J. L. A. Kayll, vicar of the parish, officially thanked the ladies of the guild and others who had helped to make the initial stages of the bazaar so successful. He, hoped the concluding stages would be as successful. The Rev. C. A. B. Watson, a former vicar of the parish, expressed his great pleasure at the opportunity to renew old acquitances. It was six and a-lfalf years since he last paid a return visit to Stratford, and ten years before that since he had lived and worked in the parish. On looking round the town he saw great changes and signs of progress and prosperity on every hand. The whole town seemed to be abounding in prosperity, and he hoped the church was prosperous as well. In formally opening the bazaar, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) congratulated the ladies on being blessed with such glorious weather. It seemed to him that church bazaars were institutions a community could not do without. He complimented the ladies upon the appearance of the hall, and hoped they would be fully compensated for their trouble.

The bazaar will open at 11 a.in. to-mor-row (Saturday). Refreshments will be available. OLD PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION. THE ANNUAL MEETING. The second annual meeting of the Stratford High School Old Pupils’ Association was held to-night, the president (Mr. D. Jeffries) presiding over a fair attendance. The annual report stated that the bal-ance-sheet although small, was quite satisfactory. The annual ball was held as usual in August, and the ball committee was to be congratulated on the outstanding success of the function. The balancesheet for the bail showed a credit balance of £5 13s sd. The executive purchased a handsome silver cup which was donated to the High School for competition in the boys’ senior championship. Members were again supplied with a copy of the school magazine, ‘ The Peak,” but the committee could not say that the system of distribution was a success as the subscriptions took a long time to come to hand and in some cases did not come at all. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2l, against £lB last year, but the president reported that the cup had been purchased since the balance-sheet was made up. The cup cost £l5, so that toe actual amount brought forward was in the vicinity of £5. The report was adopted on the motion of the president, seconded by Mr. A. H. R. Am ess.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. J. H. Thompson; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. Wood and E. McCullough; hon. secretary, Mr. H. Thomas; hon. treasurer, Mr. A. W. Davey; hon. auditor, Mr. A. B. Masters; committee, Misses I. Pratt and D. Martin, Messrs. R. Tyrer, M. Thorne, R. Grubb, D. Jeffries, F. Bowler and A. E. Papps. The president, secretary and Mr. Masters were appointed a sub-committee to interview the trustee of the Stratford Swimming Club (now disbanded) with a view to taking over the funds of that body, to be administered for the encouragement of swimming. On behalf of the Stratford Technical High School Mr. Am ess thanked the association for the gift of the old pupils’ cup, and referred to the stimulating effect it had had upon athletic sports at the school. STRATFORD A. AND P. SHOW. Entries for the Stratford A. and P. Association’s show closed last night, and although the exact number is as yet unknown, the entries are exceptionally heavy, especially in the Jersey and horse sections. Last year, Stratford had about 600 more entries than the Hawera Show, and the secretary (Mr.

A. J. Barr) believes that when the numhers are reckoned up there will bo a new record this year in Taranaki. Last year exhibitors were allowed to display decorations won at previous shows on the animals in the grand parade, and this practice will obtain again on Thursday, for the executive recognises that the fluttering colours of past glories add greatly to the appearance of the parade as a whole. GENERAL ITEMS. Suggestions on the planning and working of an efficient home were dealt with by Miss A. Shelton in an address before the Stratford branch of the Home Economics Association this afternoon. The lecture proved both practical and interesting, and at the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Miss Shelton.
