ROSS SEA EXPEDITION. NORWEGIAN FLEET SAILS. FAR CALL FROM CIVILISATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. A Norwegian whaling fleet of five whaler* and a factory ship, the Sir James Clark Ross, sailed from its base, Glory Harbour, Stewart Island, at 4 a.m. today for the Ross Sea whaling grounds. This is the second season expedition. Last season the fleet returned to the base in February. This year Captain Larsen hopes to continue till April. The Sir James Clark Ross carries a huge supply of coal, including deck cargo. The first stop will be at the Campbell Islands. Here fresh mutton will ■be taken on board, the chasers coaled, and the Sir James Clark Ross fitted with powerful wireless in order to have communication with civilisation during the long off season. The boats were renovated and refitted at the permanent base at Stewart Island. Captain Larsen anticipates a successful season in the light of the experience gained last year regarding feed, grounds, eto.
