VETERANS ENTERTAINED.

GUESTS OF ARCHDEACON EVANS. A PLEASANT GATHERING. A gathering of rare interest, breathing th- 1 atmosphere of early Taranaki, and the strife and struggle of the pioneers, took place at the Victoria League rooms, New Plymouth, yesterday, when between 40 and 50 veterans of the Maori War met as the guests of Archdeacon and Mrs. F. G. Evans. Informal as the gathering was, it wag rendered all the more interesting by the presence of the bishop of the diocese (the Right Reverend A. W. Averill). During th? afternoon the bishop delivered a fine address to the veterans, eulogising the great work they had done for their country. A musical programme had been arranged by Mr. R. N. Renaud, items being rendered by the following:—Veterans Lister and Adlam, Mesdames Wilkes and A. Osborne, Messrs. B. Bellringer and Hill. A pianoforte duet was played by Messrs. Renuad and Morgan. The function closed with three hearty cheers for the president of the Veterans’ Association (Viscount Jellicoe) and unanimous expressions of thanks to the host of the afternoon, Archdeacon Evans (vicepresident of the association) and Mrs. Evans.
