MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

NEW PLYMOUTH SITTING. RAID ON DEFAULTERS ( A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at New Plymouth yesterday,. Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., presiding. A raid, principally on the coastal district, resulted in the appearance before the court of 19 youths on charges of having failed to register under the Defence Act. The majority of the youths resided beyond the training radius. The following were convicted and discharged: Jack Bright, Herbert Bradley Benton, William W. E. Diffey, Leonard Francis Butler, John Dravitski, Edward Antony, Eric John James, William Phillip James, Arthur Robert Longstaff, James Marsh, Ronald Penwarden, Oliver Benjamin Sefton, George Swan. Fines of 5s with costs 7s were imposed on Albert Nathaniel Hooker, Frank Parker, David Neil Roes, Stanley William Sadler. Wallace Round, who had been in New Plymouth for throe years without registering, was fined 10s with costs 7‘S. George Roper was fined 10s with costs 7s for failing to notify his change of address. UNDEFENDED CLAIMS. Judgment by default for the amounts stated was given for the plaintiffs in the following undefended cases: Stainton and Co., Ltd. v. Ernest A. Lee, £lO 4s (costs £2 14s); New Plymouth Soft Goods Company v. William AVoolven, £ll 9s lOd (£2 14s); same v. Lilian Harris, .£3O 4s 10d (£4 2s 6d); J. P. Casey v. George Martin, £2 7s ( £1 5a 6d) ; Burgess, Fraser Ltd. v. GeorgeFinlay, £lO (£1 6si; Chas. H. Fox v. F. H. P. Rogers, 19s Id (8s) ; Samuel Lord v. B. J. Bentley, £lB 6s 8d ( £2 14s).

H. N. Lambert vfras ordered to* pay Associated Distributors of New Zealand Ltd. the sum of £39 7s 3d forthwith, in default 28 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as 10s a week is paid in reduction of the debt. Costs, £1 Ils 6d, were allowed the judgment creditor.

C. Gleeson was ordered to pay Bannatyne and Hunter Ltd. a debt of £l6 8s forthwith, in default 17 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as £2 a month is paid in reduction of the debt. Costs £1 Is were allowed the judgment creditor. MAINTENANCE MATTERS. A sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hai-d labour was imposed on Isaiah Francis Keenan for failing to •comply with a maintenance order, the warrant to be withdrawn if £lO is paid oil’ the arrears on or before December 18. A maintenance order was made against Harold John Faulkner for the support of his child at the rate of 15s a week. £2O past maintenance was allowed. BY-LAW BREACHES. •For cycling at night without lights Andrew Bennock and Stanley were each fined 10s with costs 7s. Brian Pease was convicted and discharged for a similar offence. William Burns, for a similar offence, was convicted and discharged. Bertrand H. Chaney was convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s for not having the registered number of his motor car attached to the machine. Leslie Martin was similarly dealt with for an offence of a like nature. John Finikin, a youth, was convicted and discharged on a charge of riding a bicycle on the footpath at Strandon. Andrew Smith was fined 30s with costs 7s for leaving his motor car in Vivian Street at night without lights. Frank 11. Washbourne was convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s for driving his taxi without a license. It was stated the license had since been taken out. Leslie J. List was fined 10s with costs 7s for riding a bicycle at night without a light and 20s with costs 7s for failing to stop when called on by the borough inspector. ALLEGED DANGEROUS DRIVING. Said to have driven his motor-car up Devon Street at between 30 and 35 miles an hour, Baden Bellringer was charged under the Motor Regulations Act with negligent driving. Exceeding the borough speed limit was admitted, and after hearing the defendant’s counsel (Mr. R. H. Quilliam), it was agreed by the court to amend the charge to one of having broken the .borough bylaws. A fine of £2 (costs 19s) was imposed.

JUVENILE COURT. In the Juvenile Court, two boys were convicted ar.d discharged for riding their bicycles at night without lights. y. . .=
