DUTIES OF J.P.’S
ADDRESS BY MAGISTRATE. An address on the duties of justices of the peace was given at New Plymouth last night by Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M. (president of the Taranaki branch of the Hon. Justices of the Peace Association). Mr. N. K. Mac Diarmid (vice-president of the association) presided. Speaking on the appointment of J.P.’s, Mr. Mowlem said that in England they were only allowed to exercise their authority within their own counties, while in New Zealand the office held good for the whole of the Dominion, including the dependencies. The duties of the office were divided into two departments, namely, judicial and ministerial, and it was* essential that every member should make himself fully acquainted with the Justices of the Peace Act. An outline of how certain cases should be conducted and a brief sketch of the Coroners Act were then given. Mr. Mowlem concluded his remarks bv stating that the office of J.P. called for good sense and strict impartiality. After several questions had .been answered Mr. Mowlem was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address.
