TRIBUTES AT AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Auckland, Sept. 23. Tributes were paid to the memory of the late Sir John Salmond at a large gathering of the Supreme Court this morning, Mr. Justice Herdman presiding and Messrs. Hunt and McKean representing the Magistrates. Mr. A. H. Johnstone, president of the Law Society, said Sir John Salmond was entitled to rank as one of New Zealand’s greatest men. His relations with the bar always showed the utmost courtesy and kindness. Mr. Justice Herdman said New Zealand law had lost a public servant of surpassing distinction. One quality that specially distinguished him was his instinctive anxiety at all times to lay bare the truth. Mr. Justice Herdman expressed the wish that his life might stimulate further generations of lawyers to .aim at reaching, the high standard which he set.
