DISTRICT NEWS.
MIDHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On September 12 the children’s fancy dress ball was held in Midhinst. Early in the evening numerous cars were to be seen travelling in frhe x direction of the town hall, which presented a festive appearance with multd-co'l’aured streamers arranged in rainbow effects. The whole district was en fete. A pleasing feature was the number of visitors who came from far and near. _ The ladies’ committee are greatly -indebted to Mrs. Mail, who so kindly played for the children’s practices, and also supplied the music for the children’s .part of the programme. During the evening Mr. Smith, chairman of the school committee, thankeef the ladies for their untiring efforts in making the ball such a success. He then introduced Mrs. R. Masters and Mrs. C. D. Sole, who had kindly come from Stratford to judge the fancy dresses. Sixteen prizes were awarded under the following headings;— Fancy—Girls: Tui Betts (Cupid) 1; Mavis Goble (Chrysanthemum) 2; Moss Gray (Butterfly) 3; Gathering Irving (French peasant), 4. Boys: Con Scanlon (Indian), 1; Theo Cookson (Gipsy Boy), 2; Percy Harkness (Bluebeard) 3. Original—Girls: Jackie Cookson (Eve) 1; Sylvia Ed wards (Carnival), 2; Annie Fulcher (Oranges and Lemons) 3. Boys: Gowan Jenkin (No More Strikes), 1; Mil ton Jenkin (Rags), 2.
Comical —-Boys: Harry Hun'wick (Rooster), 1 ; Ernie Bound (Golliwog), Poster—Archie Thompson, 1; Irene Hamblyn, 2. At 10 o’clock the children’s revels ended, while the onlookers took possession and danced to the music of Carter’s orchestra till the small hours of the morning. The Midhirst Town Hall was the scene of much amusement on Wednesday evening last, when the hard-up dance was held. Roars of laughter greeted the appearance of poverty, woe and want. Messrs. C. Phillips and D. Vickers were M.C.’s. Excellent music was supplied by Mr. Teek’s orchestra, consisting of piano, violin, cornet and drums. Miss Violet Jackson was the winner of the ladies' prize, while Mr.’ Rooney won the gentleman’s. Visitors were present from Stratford, New Plymouth, and all the surrounding districts, and. judging by the enthusiastic applause all seemed to be having a thoroughly enjoyable time.
