COMMUNITY LIGHTING SCHEME. A SUCCESSFUL ISSUE. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Sept. 19. The eonnmittee canvassing for support for the Hawera retailers’ community lighting scheme completed their work to-day, and have practically assured a successful issue. Eighty connections were req-aired to put the contract into operation and the committee succeeded in securing 85 signatures, while about five more are almost certain to sign. "It is just a question of the contract with the Electric Light Company lying for a few days and then the work of installation will begin,” said Mr. W. C. Gilbert (president of the Retailers’ Association) to a Daily News representative. Once the work was started it would take only about ten days to complete. For the present the installations would go along either side of High Street and down Union and Regent Streets. The other side streets were not being connected at the present time owing to the lack of continuity of the verandahs, but it was hoped to further extend the scheme in the near future. AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. THE ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club, to be .presented to the annual meeting on Monday night, states: — The committee is pleased to report that although the club’s activities were considerably increased during the year the financial position continues sound. The public of Hawera and district supported the club generously during the season, and the committee lias every reason to look forward to a continuance of that support during the coming year. Although the chib’s bank balance has decreased from £54 12s Ils to £25 Is lid during the year, there is no occasion for anxiety regarding funds, as the decrease was to a great measure caused by the fact that the club carried on during the year on its own resources and did not have to appeal to Hie generosity of the sporting public foi assistance in the way of donations.
'During the season the club entered into an agreement with the A. and P. Association to install electric lighting and run night sports on the sports ground. The cost of the lighting was £93, but proceeds from the four night meetings held reduced the amount, which now stands at £43, and the club is responsible for half of the balance owing. Weather conditions seriously affected the public attendance at some of the meetings, otherwise the debt would have been considerably le«s than it now stands at. However, it is confidently expected that the deficiency, of the greater portion, will be cleared off by holding a monster carnival on show night in November. The West Coast Centre championships were carried out at Hawera under the auspices of the dub. The public attendance was poor, no doubt due to the fact that the sports had to be held on a Saturday. It is very pleasing to record that the club was successful in winning the West Coast championship banner, and it is hoped that it will be retained this season.
It is said that there is a possibility that some of the athletes who compet eJ at the Olympic Games will tour Australia and New Zealand during the coming season, and it ia hoped that should the tour eventuate Hawera will be included in the itinerary.
A cycle road race was held in June last and proved very successful. A field of 2 cyclists competed. The social interest of the club was promoted by holding dances, and a picnic at Opunake beach. One pleasing aspect of the balancesheet is the marked increase in members and honorary members’ subscriptions.
The Burdekin Cup, for running and field events, was won by S. Shore. The Barnett Glass Company’s Cup. for cycling events was won by C. Loreto. The club desires to thank Mr. Gray, principal of the Technical nigh School, for the interest he and his pupils have shown in the club’s meetings, and also to the press for its valued assistance; to Mr. B. W. H. Smart, for auditing the club’s books, and to all those who assisted the club in carrying out its various sports meetings. During the year the club lost the services of its handicapper (Mr. A. Kean), who has removed to New Plymouth. Mr. Kean was an enthusiastic official of the club, and it is regretted that his services will not be available during the coming season. Several new memliers have intimated that they will be competitors during the coming season, and the committee has every reason to look forward tc the future with confidence. GENERAL ITEMS. The erection of nine railway cottages on the Turuturu Road will be commenced shortly, the contract having been secured by Messrs Henderson, Howell, King and Rudge. A meeting of the committee of the Hawera Football Club last night decided. to proceed with the scheme organised by Mr. L. 0. Hooker with the object of building training sheds, and a resolution was passed thanking Mr. H. Good for his offer to lend the money to buy a quantity of gold for an art union. The Hawera Borough Council is now inviting applications for the position of I bandmaster-conductor of the Hawera Municipal Band, and is also calling for the enrolment of instrumentalists willing to join the band.
