BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

NKW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL, WORK JF THE MONTH. The New Plymouth Borough <Ctoun<cil met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and Crs. J. Kibby, F. Amoore, Birovvn and J. Lobb. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. V. Griffitihs, F. J. Hill and S. G. Smith, M.P. In the course of his monthly report, the borough engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) said that the filling in of the Gilbert Street gully was well in hand and would be completed shortly as far as the south side was concerned. Over 4000 cubic yards of clay had been carted to the gully and the culvert had been lengthened by 20 feet. The Gover Street washout had been attended to, the pipes having been laid into the tunnel up to the sandstone and tihe drain at the outlet deepened by about four feet.

For the Mill Road bridge the foundations had been excavated. In the course of this part of the work a fair amount of timber was met with, causing some delay. The concrete footings had been joined and flooring had been boxed ready for pouring concrete. All the steelwork had been prepared. A trial had been m|ade of pumping from the well in Brougham Street by the fire brigade and from the superintendent’s remarks it might be taken he was well satisfied with the result. BAND -RECITALS. A programme of recitals by the regimental band in the various reserves of the borough during the coming summer was approved, the programme providing for four recitals at the Breakwater, and one each at Pukekura Park, Western Park, Kawaroa Park, East End and at Ngamotu Beach. The band was also given permission to give additional concerts in which collections for the band funds might be taken up. The collections at the various park recitals are to be in aid of the funds of the parks concerned. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT.

The report of the electrical engineer (Mr. W- H. Huggett) for the month of August stated that forty-five applications had been received for electrical energy; 11 additions made to existing installations and 69 new connections made during the month. Extensions into the Brixton. Lepper ton and Egmont Village districts were practically completed, and the Inglewood transmission line had been in commission since August 23, the maximum demand reaching approximately 80 k.w. The, Waiwakaibo River had been high during the greater part of the month, rises of seven feet being recorded. At the hydro works the main work having been completed, the men, when not working on the power house machinery foundations, had been employed in removing buildings, cleaning up and planting trees, etc. The plant at the power house and the sub-station had been operating satisfactorily and maintenance had been normal.

ABATTOIRS REPORT. The manager of the abattoirs (Mr. W J. Killeen) reported that during August there were slaughtered for local calves, 4)10 sheep and 140 pigs. Compared with the previous August the figures showed an increase of 23 calves, 37 sheep and 41 pigs, and a decrease of three cattle. Fees and rente collected during the month amounted to £206 3s fid, an increase of £l4 7s 4d. GENERAL MATTERS. The Fitzroy Seaside Committe thanked the council for its co-operation in the deputation wiiidhi waited on the Harbour | Board concerning a reserve for Fitzroy, and suggested that a committee be set lup to confer with a committee from the harbour board on the question of a suitable lease. The seaside committee offered its services in this matter. —'Received. In reply to a letter concerning the Veales estate rubbish dump, Messrs • Standish and Anderson are to be informed that as the council is improving the land acquired and as landowners i fected would have a satisfactory remeuy . in the event of the council creating a nuisance or blocking the stream, the council is unable to see its way to give the special undertakings askvd for, but that Mr. Veale may rely upon Lue council to do its best to prevent any nuisance being created and to prevent any blocking of the stream on its land. The council decided to hand to its representatives on the Egmont National Park Board the complaint of the New Zealand Forestry League concerning the damage being done to the bush bv goats and cattle.

The petitioners for the forming and channelling of the footpath in Gilbert Street between Gover and Liardet Streets are to be informed that the petition will be considered when next year’s estimates are being framed. The borough engineer w r as authorised to purchase and ins-tal for tar boiling three 400 gallon trnks and pipe fittings at an approximate cost of £O5.

The sexton was authorised to remove th* Norfolk pines on each side oi the drive near the mortuary chapel at Te Henui cemetery.

Or. F. J. Hill was appointed a member of the works committee in the place of Mr. R. A. Large, who recently resigned from the council.
