NEW PLYMOUTH POLICE.
NO INCREASE IN FORCE. (By Wire —-Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. Mr. S, G. Smith (Taranaki) asked in the House recently whether, in view of the large increase of population in an 1 around New Plymouth and its growing importance as a sea-port, instructions would be given to jncrea®o the staff of the district by the appointment cf at least three constables. Mr. Smith said that during the p.tst ten years the population of the borough had increased by double. Tile Minister xor Justice (the Hon. C. J. ‘Parr) replied to-day as follows; “The population of Ne'w Plymouth increased from 7983 in 1914 to 13,090 in 1t ! 24, equal to 64 per cent. The strength of the police increased from eight in 1914 to 14 in 1924, equal to 75 per cent. The proportion of police to the population in the whole Dominion is one to 1312 and at New Plymouth it is one to 925. It is idOt considered necessary to increase the strength there at present.”
