GOVERNOR AT CHURCH.
INCIDENT AT WANGANUI. ALLEGED COM'PLAIXT AT SERVICE. DENIAL BY LORD JELMOOE. A message telegraphed from Wanganui yesterday stated that Lord and Lady Jellicoe attended the morning service at the Anglican Church on Sunday, and the minister, the Rev. Mr. Hobbs, took the opportunity in a lengthy sermon to dwell upon the evils of racing, bridge parties, etc. A number of people, who usually do not frequent church, attended because their Excellencies were there and felt somewhat uncomfortable under the minister’s cutting remarks. ' The message added that Lord Jellicoe had arranged to attend the evening service at St. Peter’s, Gonville, but early in the afternoon the minister there received a teiphone message to the effect that in all probability Lord Jellicoe would be an absentee if the service was going to be anything like the morning one. The diplomatic minister cut the service short, and all hands left the church well pleased. Lord Jellicoe’s private secretary authorises the Daily News to say that His Excellency at no time made any comment on the sermon referred to, to which he took no exception. Neither was he responsible for nor aware of any message being sent with regard to the evening service. Telephone inquiries in Wanganui last night failed to throw any light on the matter, neither the morning nor evening .paper in Wanganui mafldtnfe any such suggestion in its issue of yesterday.
