ELTHAM COUNTY.
PAST MONTH’S WORK. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting of the Eltham County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Councillors C. J. Belcher (chairman), R J. Knuckey, A. McWHllara, A. V. Messena, M. W. Barker, A. Caanipbefll, W. E. Carter, C. E. McGuinness, E. J. Gifford. The overseer (Mr. F. Muggeridge) reported as follows: South Riding.—During the month water tables and culverts were attended to on all roads In this riding. SJdo tracks were patched on the Boylan and Mountain Roads. Tar patching was done on the Rotokare and Fraser Roads. Mangatokl Riding.—General maintenance work was carried out on the Duthle, lower and upper Hastings, Hunter and Stuart Roads. A guard fence on the lower Hunter was repaired, and an old wooden culvert was replaced by concrete pipes. The side tracks on tlio upper Stuart Road were filled with clay in readiness for metalling. Omona Riding.—-Water tables and culverts were attended to on the Rawhitlroa, Matalwfaetu, Karewa, Waltirl and Matemaroke {loads. Metal patching was done on the Ba-whi-tiroa Road. The filling at Matpmate&onga has been completed.
Kaponga Riding.—The surfacemen in this riding have been engaged most of the month in getting’ out crushed shingle in readiness for the bitumen sealing of the various road? to he treated this season. About 40 yards of maintenance metal was crushed at Kaponga. While the crushing plant was In the riding we did three days’ crushing for the Kaponga Town Board. Tim crusher is now at the depot being overhauled. Btthaan Riding.—Slips and water tables were cleaned, and patching was done on the Rawhitinoa and Tirlmoana Roads. Side tracks were patched on the Mountain Road. Drains and the bridle track on the Wingrove Road were attended To. General. —The erection of the chip crushing plant is completed, and has been put under cover, the plant h working well, the output, to date being 490 yards of clean chips. The bitumen sprayer was converted Into a power unit by Messrs. Nixon and Co., of New Plymouth. Before taking delivery of the machine a demonstration was given before 'he chairman and overseer. Everything worked quite satisfactory. New gears are
being fitted to the roller as the old ones are badly worn. As authorised, a spring cart ha 3 been bought, but so far we have not been able to produce a suitable horse. One of the horses out of the team at the depot has gone lame, and wHt not be of muob um to the council in future. The report was adopted. GENERAL. "Knowing the need for haste, the lad’s desire outran his discretion, but the boy had taken the warning seriously, and members of the county council would have no further cause for complaint,” wrote the clerk of the Kaponga Town Board in reply to a letter sent by the county clerk drawing the town board’s attention to the fact that a car belonging to the town board had been driven over the intersection of the Ha-stlngs and Eltham Roads at an estimated speed of about 45 miles per hour. The town board further stated that the car was driven by the engineer’s assistant, a lad of 18 who had been sent to Eltham for some material which was urgently wanted.—Received. Mr. M. Walmsley wrote asking permission to erect a cream stand on the side of the Mala Road, and Mr. Major forwarded a similar request in respect to the Rawhitiroa Road. —Thp matter was left in the hands of the chairman and engineer. Five ratepayers on‘the Mata Road petitioned the council to raise a special loan of £6OO to metal 25 chains of the road and alteration of grade on McQueen’s Hill.—Left in the hands of Cr. KnuCkey, the chairman, and the clerk with power to act. The Taumarunul County Council wrote asking the council to pass a resolution in support of the payment of half of all revenue derived from the sale of Crown timber to the counties from within whose areas the timber was cut. —Such a resolution was adopted. The State Advances Office wrote Infownlng the council that the £2OOO applied for tn respect to the South Riding loan had been lodged in the bank to the council’s credit.— —-Received.
A telegram was read from Mr. O. Hawken, MP„ advising that the Tirlmoana and Omona loans of £l5OO each had been sanctioned.
It was decided to apply for two loans of £lOOO each la respect to the two ridings mentioned, and another loan of £3OOO for the South Riding.
