EVICTIONS IN GLASGOW. CROWD ATTACK OFFICERS JJy Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. London, Sept. 12. The Clydebank rent strike. which hinges on the tenants’ demand for prewar rents and refusal to pay arrears, led to an exciting scene this morning - . The arrival of the sheriff's officers, escorted by police, to eject a widow and family in St. Granville Street was heralded by the ringing of hand-bells and blowing of whistles, a pre-arranged signal denoting that an eviction was occurring. A crowd of 500 collected. The officers carried out some of the furniture but sympathisers swarmed in and hampered them, compelling the officers bo desist. The widow meanwhile had a seizure and a doctor wae summoned. The crowd was becoming threatening. The officers drove off in a* motor car. pelted with clods of grass and srtones. The crowd afterwards carried back the furniture.
Subsequently several Labour town addressed tbo crowd. A local committee was formed to organize a campaign of resistance. In the events of house factors declining to join in the rent tribunal a general rent strike all over the district may be declared.
