SPORTING.

RACES AT MARTON. to-day and to-mokbow. PROSPECTS DISCUSSED (By “Mo-turoa.”)’ After light rains on. Thursday and Friday the weather In Marton cleared .up, and since then has been bright and aunny, and at time of writing (noon yesterday) & high glass and a cloudless sky point to favourable weather being experienced for this week's racing. The Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting takes place to-day, and the Rangltlkel Hunt Club’s meeting to-morrow, .proceedings commencing sharp at 11.30 a.m. each day. Very big fields ace carded for both gatherings, the only scratchings posted being Ruby Red,. Kyla, Eh Timl, and Pratique, all In the Tri’al Plate, and Elothenes and Transformer, in the Tutaenui Welter. Miss Mickey earned a 51b: penalty when she won at New Plymouth on Saturday, and will carry lOst. lib. if started In the Hack Hurdles to-day. The following horses arrived at Marton cn Monday:—Quest, Quiescent, Slump, Miss O’DIJle, Wesbbroke, My Hoihby, Landbird, Tuihlne, Mimetic, Maniatere, Veiociform, Black Cruiser, Mahla, Sky Blue, Royal Divorce, Fool’s Paradise, Purseproud, Correspondent, Serene, Cambric, Mime, Crown Gem, Suspicion, Walltea, La R©ve, Gamecock, Lady Joyce, Mountain Top, Megan, Silken Rein, Mllitalre, and Frllford. Taranaki and Manawatu horses were due yesterday afternoon, and the Kemball team may not reach headquarters until this morning. There is every prospect of large fields, keen racing—and surprises! To-day's racing opens with the Trial Plate, five furlongs; weight 9st. Scratchings have reduced the field to thirty-three, but with such a crowd the draw for pbst positions may have much to say as to the result of the flutter. Weet is a quick beginner and should be well .conditioned, having had three races at Rliecarton. Azecta is another that goes fairly fast, and Lady Ristorl has a good turn of speed. Serene, by Serembnd, is also well spoken of, but it is hardly a race to "plunge” on, particulariy for stay-at-home punters. ■ Nineteen remain In the Hack Hurdles, one and a half miles, and the tried division Include Demand, Alarlc, and Brigadier Bill, which should be sufficient to try out a recent winner, Miss Mickey.

The Spring Hack Handicap, eight and a half ftirlongs, with eleven acceptors, should be an interesting race. The New Zealand Cup candidate Tanadees fills the post of honour, and the son of Rosetforthy has some fine performances to his credit. Mountain Signal is more forward, however, and (If reserved) Is sure to claim a lot of support. Opa is another good stayer, and Lady Comet is not troubled by distance. Mountain Signal and Opa may strip as fit as anything engaged.

The Marton Hack, one and a quarter miles, has a neat dozen engaged, with hardly a bad one 'n the lot. Arch Salute, the topweight, usually races well at Marton, and Muskefoon, Correspondent, Diamond Ring and Black Cruiser are all looking very well. Diamond Ring may have many friends, but there will also be big money for Musketoon and Arch ■ Salute.

Ten remain <n the Hack Steeples, two and a half miles, and Quanaco, Mllitalre, and Blue Hall appear tt> be the most discussed candidates.

The Electric Hack Handicap, six furlongs, with twenty-one engaged. Is another open event Rehutal, Kuhio and Quiescent are speedy ones amongst the top-weights, and Lucrative reads well lower down the handicap.

Sixteen were paid up for in the Railway Hack, six furlongs, and amongst the number are smart sprinters like Lady Bentlnck. Startle, Royal Divorce and Avola. To-day’s racing concludes with the Tutaenul Welter, seven furlongs, and the possible runners number eighteen. Mountain Signal (If reserved), Peut-etre, and Merry Queen are all likely to have plenty of admirers.
