DOMINION SHOW.

BIG CROWDS AT HAWERA. POULTRY SECTION JUDGED. BALANCE OF THE AWARDS. There was a Iftrge attendance at the Dominion Winter Show at Hawera yesterday, and all expressed themselves as delighted with the varied nature of the show. Those who wef'e visiting it for the first time were surprised at its magnitude and general excellence. The secretary and organiser (Mr. L. O’. Hooker) and his committee were again the recipients of many congratulatory remarks. The show will be open each day until the end of the week. Yesterday’s takings created a record for any one day in the history of the show, amounting to £277 Ils 7d. The crowds last night were particularly large. Two interesting exhibits in the agricultural section are the mangolds grown -for competition in the farmers’ field competitions in the Wanganui and South Taranaki districts. In each case the competition is for a handsome cup presented by Messrs. Bennett and Sutton. In the Wanganui district, M-r. H. C. Birch, of Maxwelltown, has three times in succession won the cup, which now become his property. In 1922, Mr. Birch’s crop averaged 88 tons to the acre, in 1923 93 tons scwt., and in 1924. 110 tons 14cwt., each succeeding year showing a remarkable improvement in the crop. Keener competition is taking -place in the South Taranaki district. In 1922, Mr. J. Dakers (Manaia) was the winner with 91 tons 4cwt., in 1923 Mr. G. C. P. Willis (Matapu) with 84 tons Bcwt., and in 1924 Mr. F. Hoskin (Matapu) with 96 tons 19cwt. The destruction of swede crops by diseases every year has led the management of the Moumahaki State Farm to experiment for the purpose of finding a substitute for the swede. For some time a French field carrot known as the Gurande has been successfully grown, and Mr. J. W. Deem, fields instructor and manager of the farm, told a Daily News reporter at the Hawera Show yesterday that the carrot was proving a worthy substitute for the swede. Specimens of the root are exhibited at the show. Three new t arieties of mangolds, known as the Danish Strying (recently imported from Denmark). Garton’s Giant White Knight, and Eckendorfer Red Tankard were also ’being successfully grown, as the exhibits testified. The fallowing 13 the balance of the prize list HONEY.
