STRATFORD NEWS.

BUSINESS MEN’S LUNCHEON. ADDRESS BY }LR. A. CARR. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, July 3. A very able address of an interesting and instructive nature was delivered by Mr. A Carr,, ex-president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, at the business men’s luncheon to-dffy. About sixty attended. Mr. Carr who has travelled extensive!}’, and, for a time was a guest of the Kaiser in Germany, retained the interest of his audience to the end, and, as the address was interspersed with anecdotes and humorous recollections, the time passed all too quickly for most of the diners. Mr. Carr took for his subject: “The Impressions of a New Zealander on a Trip Abroad.” In fancy he took his audience from city to city, describing the habits of the residents and the characteristics of the country. He also touched upon factors which were not usually found in any reference book or guide. These matters he described in an interesting fashion, and supplied comparisons between the characteristics of different nations and peoples, and, where applicable, showed how we in New Zealand could benefit from contact with other parts of the world. Speaking of the formation of the Progress League, Mr. Carr suggested that more talks by local gentlemen should be instituted. He congratulated the town upon the idea of forming a progress league, which he considered to be a great institution in tfie business and political lives oi any community. 'He believed that if the Stratford (Progress League had been in existence years ago, the gap in the line to the Main Trunk would have been completed before to-day. He assured the meeting that if the Minister for Public Works was a reasonable man, and, in the continuance.of his policy of concentration upon individual works until they were completed, he would undoubtedly give Ipromiinence to the speedy completion of the StratfordOkahukura railway. It seemed only a few years ago when, to cross Broadway, he had had to watch his steps very carefully. To-day the town had one of the finest main streets in the Dominion and he congratulated the residents on the progress of the town. On the motion of the Rev. G. P. Hunt, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Carr. PERSONAL. Mr. W. P. 'Miller, who for the past two years has very ably filled the position of stationmaster at Stratford, has been promoted to stationmaster at Ohakune. KING’S THEATRE, STRATFORD. “FLAMING YOUTH”—TO-NIGHT. “Flaming Youth,” the First National special feature will be the star attraction at the King's Theatre, Stratfor.!, to-night (Thursday). The picture as the book is a startling exposure of ultra-modern society with its flapperism and its search for new sensations. The story is so intimate that the author hid his identity under a nom de plume. Whether the author be man or woman is not known, but the writer claims to be a physician who sees through the body to the soul of women who are restless, seductive, greedy, discontented, craving sensation, unrestrained, a little morbid, more than a little selfish, intelligent, following blind instincts and perverse fancies, slack of mind as she is trim in body, neurotic and vigorous, a worshipper of tinselled Gods at perfumed al tars—a fit mate for the restless hurried man of the age. The picture has been treated with the utmost delicacy. A big cast of well known players interpret the various roles and include Coleen Moore. Milton Sills, Eliot Dexter, Sylvia and many others.
