The fire-fighting apparatus of the New Plymouth brigade has been strengthened by the recent purchase of a “speed” truck, which, with the powerful pumping engine and the smaller engine, brings the number of engines up to three. The recent acquisition is large enough to carry a sufficient number of men to a fire but is smaller in rise than the big engine already in commission. The new engine is capable of travelling at approximately 45 miles an hour, and has accommodation for 2000 feet of hose, and 35 feet of extension ladder. A platform runs along each side for brigade men, support being provided by a trass rail running around the top of the vehicle. The hose is packed in boxes situated on either side and one in the rear, while nearer the engine are four spaces, wherein chemical extinguishers may be placed. Although the engine is very sturdy and heavily built, it is neat in appearance, the red paint and shining fittings combining to produce a pleasing, spic and span effect. The small engine will now give place to the more up-to-date one but will continue to attend fires until the next practice, when the new truck will be tried out. Mr. A.
