FOOTBALL.

TARANAKI TRIAL MATCH. SOUTH WIN BY SIX TO THREE. PLAY IN BAD WEATHER. Conditions could scarcely have been worse for football when South Taranaki defeated North Taranaki in a representative trial match at Eltham yesterday by six points to three. - The heavy rain had made the ground Very soft, with the result that the junior game, which preceded the big match, turned it almost into a quagmire. This, combined with the heavy showers at intervals throughout the match, added further to the difficulties and made anything like a scientific display of football almost impracticable. The main object of the match was to give the selectors an opportunity of viewing the form of the leading players of the province, but on the day the game proved of very little value, as it was impossible for players to show’ their true form, so greasy was the ball and so slippery the ground. Indeed, after a few minutes it wa* almost impossible to distinguish the players. Naturally the match developed into a forward struggle, though the backs on both sides made attempts to open out the game. Their efforts gave the Impression that, had the day been fine, « fast, open game would have resulted. As it was the game proved interesting, there being some splendid forward rushes on both sides. On the day South was the better team. Their forwards adapted themselves more to the conditions, keeping the ball at their feet, whilst their hacks handled the ball with more precision. Taken right through the defence of both teams was sound.

The teams took the field as selected, except that in the North team R. 'Oliver replaced Coatts at first five-eighths and Clarke replaced Bruce at wing three-quarter, while in the South team, Sinclair, who was indisposed,, was replaced by Philpott, of Eltham. North played in amber and black and were led by Fryday, while South played in black and were led by G. Taylor. SOUTH OPENS ATTACK. Almost from the start the South forwards attacked, and, keeping up the pressure, Roberts and McGregor took part in a movement that culminated in u force. A moment later from a place kick, Patterson failed to goal. Clarke broke away and with J. Taylor carried play to South’s twenty-five, but with a hefty rush the South forwards, headed by Chadwick, Ike and G. Taylor, were again swarming on the North’s line. A weak kick by Ross hold danger until Priar saved. Roberts smartly marked but failed to goal. South continued to attack solidly and., Ike and Chadwick rushed the ball to the line, where Penniall was unlucky to be ‘beaten bv the ball. Again Penniall was nearly over, but Priar saved. Not j to be denied the South forwards came again and Ike scored. C. Paterson failed to goal. South 3 North 0 Almost immediately South were awarded a free kick and Johnston landed a good goal. South 0 North 0 North now took a turn, Morrison, Taylor, Kivell and Walters being prominent, but Roberts. Johnston and Penniall were defending well, whilst a moment later Sheehan checked a dangerous North rush by marking in front of the posts. After a spell of defence South again asserted themselves and, following an opening by McGregor, their forwards came swarming down. Bayly checked and North attacked again, Matene having :• resultless shot from a, penalty . Half time was called with the e core : South 8 North 0 NORTH TURNS TABLES.

For the second spell O’Connell replaced Rayner in the North forwards, whilst Linehan went in as five-eighths, Ennis dropping back to centre three?uarter in place of Clarke. The South orwards opened aggressively, but Rors broke through and, backed up by the forwards, brought play to the South line. The defence, however, was sound Meuli made a good opening for Ennis, whose pass went wide, and Ike and Chadwick headed a rush that was not checked till it reached the North twen-ty-five, where Sheehan sent the ball along tile line of backs to Penniall, who was collared* by Meuli. Chadwick was near ly over, but suddenly Walters started a hot rush that completely turned the tables as Linehan and Meuli carried the leather over the South line, where Linehan fell on it. Ennis failed to goal. South 6 North 3

Again South set up a solid rush, which Penniall checked, and after a period of :ight play Roberts secured and shot the ball to McGregor, who cut through and handed on to Taylor, but the latter had no one in support. The Southerners kept up the pressure, Penniall Taylor and Johnston being dangerous, when Matene saved by marking on the line. C. Paterson was unable to pick up the greasy ball ana North had another let off, and they signalised it by sweeping right down the field and compelling Philpott to kick behind the line, the ball being forced from the resultant scrum. Oliver tried to pot, I another force resulting. Play travelled [swiftly to the other end of the field find twice in succession North was ; forced, once as the outcome of concerted play by MdGregor and Penniall, jb’.nd again from a forward rush headed by Ike and O’Rorke. Play ended soon after with no further score: South 6 North 3 Mr. A. H. Guy refereed. DEWAR SHIELD. SEVEN-ASIDE COMPETITION. The Stratford Club officials are putting forth every effort to make the seven-aside tournament on June 3 (King’s Birthday) worthy of the great interest that is being shown by all footballers and supporters throughout Taranaki. No efforts are being spared to provide for the convenience of competing teams or the comfort of spectators, and it is hoped a large crowd will assemble in Victoria Park for the occa-

Nielson (secretary). 1 A letter was received from the Clifton Club stating that Hellier had apologised for nis conduct. It was resolved that the player be suspended for two fixture Saturdays. In reply to a letter from the union asking for an explanation as to why the club had played Sharrock when informed that he hah been suspended, the Stratford Club explained that Sharrock had been informed that, he was not to play. On arrival of the Okaiawa team it was found that Johnson, who had been ordered off at Waitara. was playing. .Sharrock. who was very keen, approached Mr. Thurston. the selector, and asked to he allowed tn play, claiming the same consideration as Johnson. Mr. Thurston thinking this reasonable, allowed him to play. The committee regretted that the instructions from the union were not adhered to. and had asked Mr. Thurston to see that there was no repetition of the offence.—After some discussion it was resolved that the Stratford-Okai-awa match be replayed at Stratford, the gate to be taken bv the union. A letter was received from the Stratford Club, objecting to the boundaries as fixed by the union.—lt was resolved to again reopen the question, notice of motion being given to rescind the resolution passed at last meeting.
