A Wellington telegram reports the death of Dr. William Baxter Gow, formerly in charge of the Mount View and Sunnyside Mental Hospitals. A Hobart cablegram states that Colonel Eccles Snowden has been appointed Agent-General for Tasmania in succession to Mr. A. H. Ashbolt, who has held the position since 1919. The successor to Mr. W. A. Beddoe, who has been Canadian Trade Commissioner for New Zealand since 1910, will be Mr. C. M. Croft, Assistant-Commissioner. Mt. W. R. Adams, the relieving teacher at the Manaia School last year, has returned ,to Taranaki, and intends to take up his duties at Matapu on Monday as headmaster of that school. Mr. W. S. Swinburn, headmaster of the Landsowne school (Wairarana) for the past few months and before that at Waitara, has been appointed headmaster of the Campbell Street school in Palmerston North.

Miss A. Cocker, M.A., of the Wellington Girls’ College, has been appointed to a higher position on the staff of the college. Miss Cocker is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Cocker, of New Plymouth. The death of Mr. Frank Whitwell, of Wakapuaka, is reported in a Press telegram from Nelson. Mr. Whitwell was one of the leading fanners of the district, being formerly the provincial president of the Farmers’ Union and a director of the Nelson Freezing Company.

Mr. H. Ward will retire at the end of this month from the firm of Messrs. H. Ward, Ltd., hardware merchants, New Plymouth, after having been engaged in the business for over 30 years, and Mr. L. Little will join the firm as managing director. Mr. Little has been manager for Bellringer Bros, for the past 21 years. The death of Mr. Robert Malcolm, a well-known settler of the Oaonui district, occurred at New Plymouth last night. The late Mr. Malcolm, who was 87 years of age, settled at Oaonui some forty years ago and he was a highly respected farmer in the district. He served in the Indian Mutiny, enlisting with the troops in England as a young man, and after his discharge came out to New Zealand. Mrs. Malcolm died about eighteen months ago, and the late Mr. Malcolm is survived by four daughters—Mrs. Carlson (Scotland), Mrs. Campbell (Dunedin), Mrs. Lusk (Oaonui) and Mrs. Allen (Vogeltown, New Plymouth)—and two sons—Mr. Robert Malcolm (Opunake) and Mr. James Malcolm (Oaonui).
