CAUSES OF UNEMPLOYMENT.

WOMEN VERSUS MEN

Some interesting facts regarding affairs in Great Britain were supplied by Mr. J. C. Beiley managing director of the Royal Doulton Potteries Company, England, who is on a business visit to New Zealand.

Referring to the unemployment situation in England, Mr. Bailey said a large number were out of work, but one factor of the position that had not been stressed was the great number of women who were doing work which before the war they would have never though of undertaking.

For instance, before the war the banks did not employ a single girl. During the war, however, they had to employ girls and they had retained a large number of them. In his own pottery works they were employing a larger number of women than before the war. One reason for so many men. being out of work was because there were so many women in employment. There was a surplus of women in England and tbey r could not all find husbands. Therefore many of them had to work for their living. Another point was that a class of women were in employment who, before the war, would have thought it infra dig to work. Mr. Bailey added that occasionally a lady traveller visited his office. Such a thing was unheard of before the war.

With regard to the Labour Government, Mr. Bailey said he had nothing against what, the Government were doing, or proposed to do, since they came into office. If they went on as they were doing no one should have any cause to regret that Labour had got into power. Of course there were extremists in the party, but not many.
