DEFENCE OF FRANCE.
ARMY ON THE FRONTIER. MUCH MATERIAL WANTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 19, 7.55 p.m. Paris, March 19. M. Fabry, introducing the Army Bill, said the frontier army’s mission would be to give the country an assurance that at. any moment a strong battle front could be formed beyond the Rhine. The frontier army could not rely wholly upon itself. National forces would have to support it, but reserves could not be mobilised under satisfactory conditions unless the frontier army was covered, this operation assuring the country freedom of military movement.
It was objected that the frontier army would be costly, requiring an enormous amount of material. The country must provide that material. Two men had charge of a tank on the battlefield, but forty-five were required to maintain the tank serviceably. An airman fought alone, but sixty men’s work was necessary to enable him to fight.
