ATHLETICS.

With characteristic American modesty Joie Ray entered for a -3000-metres race, which was held in Brooklyn on a recent Saturday. He entered thusly: —‘‘Am enclosing my entry for your 3000inetres race. I’m going to win it for the third time and take the Hirshon Trophy home for keeps. Please make the distance of the race two miles, the same as last year,as I expect to break the world's record for that distance, as well as those established at intermediate distances last year. 1 am also out to win the meritorious trophy again.” The result of the race has not reached us yet, and in. the absence of official news we are not inclined to publish Joie’s victory on the strength of the above little boost.
