AN UNPLEASANT INCIDENT. PLAYER DISPUTES DECISION. By Telegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Jan. 30. The Cannes correspondent of the Daily Express reports an unpleasant incident in the final of the ladies’ doubles, in which Mdlle. Lenglen and Miss Ryan played Mesdames Covell and Shepherd Barrow. During the first set a linesman left his place to ask the umpire a question. A minute later he called a foot fault against Mdlle. Lepglen, who thereupon stopped playing and told the linesman: “You know nothing about the game; 'you are wrong.” She then left the court and went, nearly in tears, to her mother and refused to continue till another linesman was appointed. This the umpire refused to do, holding that the foot fault decision was right. Mdlle. Lenglen returned to the court, declaring: “It is unfair. The English are pigs.’’ She then turned the full force of her fury towards the linesman, but he missed It, because he is deaf. Mdlle. Lenglen adhered to her refusal to play. The matter was settled by the referee of the tournament asking the linesman to resign, to which the latter agreed In the interests of the tournament. Mdlle. Lenglen and Miss Ryan won comfortably 6—3, 6—4. INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS. TO-MORROW’S MATCHES. The postponed B grade (North Section) fixture between Pukekura Park and New Plymouth B will take place at the Park* Club’s courts to-morrow, ccmmencing at 1.30 p.m. The following players will represent Park: Wheeler, £lair, Shipton, Shearer. Bosworth. Brooker, Missed Ludlow, Baker, Peters and Honnor.
