GREAT LINER AGROUND.
MISHAP TO LEVIATHAN. New York, Dec. 21. The liner Leviathan, the largest passenger ship in the world, formerly the German liner Vaterland (54,282 tons), stranded during a heavy fog in upper New York Bay. off Robbins Reef. The great ship had a slight list, but it was believed that she was not in a dangerous position. She had cleared quarantine, and was en route up the bay when the accident occurred at half tide. She grounded close to the rocks, but the bottom where she actually rested was muddy. The Leviathan had several thousand passengers on board, who were hurrying home for Christmas. No fewer than 18 tugs went to the assistance of the stranded liner, and these succeeded in refloating her, but not until she had sustained serious damage. She will lie up now until the spring, as this was to have been her last trip for the season in any event.
