FIRST AUSTRALIAN GOLD.

, STORY OF DISCOVERY. ... - Sydney, Dec, 12. The people of Orange, one of the leading country towns of New South Wales, will shortly celebrate one of the most notable events in Australian history, with the unveiling of an obelisk at a little neighbouring place called Ophir to mark the site of the first gold discovery in Australia of payable gold, between April 7 and April 12, 1851. Those responsible for the discovery were Edward Hammond Hargreaves, John Hardman Australia Lister, James Tom and William Tom. From experience gained in California. Hargreaves formed the idea that the district was auriferous, and he found the first gold on February 12, 1851. He explained to the others how to prospect and make use of a miner’s cradle and there followed the discovery of payable gold in April by Lister and William Tom.
