IMPORTANT STUD SALE.

One of the best known and most breeders of stud stock in the Dominion is Mr. W. D. Hunt, whost studs of Romney Marsh sheep ami Friesian cattle are maintained on his several properties close to Invercargill. Owing to his permanent residence being now in the North Island, Mr. Hunt ha*» recently decided to entirely disperse his studs in, February and March of next year. His Romney stud is looked upon as one i f the finest in the Dominion, as the owner has set for himself throughout its 15 years’ history an exceptionally high standard. Although meeting with considerable success in the ahow ring. Mr. Hunt* decided that the forcing necessary for success was inimical to the welfare of stud sheep, and he Anally gave up the practice. He then established an annual sale, at which he offered his annua! draft of 250 to 350 fllack rams. Previously he had received top prices at the annual Southland Ram Fair. His annual sale was an immediate success, ami attracted ‘buyers from al! ipartri of New Zealand; so that his Romneys have been tried out under most varied conditions. The fact that he has received regular repeat orders from year to year from all parts sneaks for itself in regard to the merit of his Romneys. They are reared on country which is very similar to the Romney marshes of Kent, the original home of the breed, and these Ba infield sheep are unexcelled for constitution and feet as well as heavy clipping quality. The establishment of the flock was gone about in a most thorough way, Mr. Hunt buying only the very best. Although his sheep ccme from a common foundation (all noted stud), he made selections of picked ewes from the most notable studs in both Islands. Tn the 15 years of its existence Mr. Hunt has purchased for his otud 899 ewes. As an evidence of the very heavy culling practised, the total offering at his sale will approximate 1500 head. It can readily be understood, therefore, that the Bainficld stud has been bred to a comparatively high stamlA complete history of the flock in catalogue form is now available from the auctioneers. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Wellington. No doubt flock masters in thks, district will avail themselves of this unique opportunity to secure the highest class of Romneys. In addition to the stud sheep, the annual draft of 380 cine-shear Romney rams will aL-o be sold. The sale takes place at Waitoru, of the Bainfield estates, near Invercargill, on February Bth and 9th.
