Mr. A. Wheelpr, of New Plymouth, passed in torts and criminal law at the recent law professional and LL.B, degree examinations.

Mr. M. Hawkins, Inspector of Prisons and acting Controller-General of Prisons, accompanied by Mrs. Hawkins, is paying a visit of inspection to New Plymouth prison. The death occurred suddenly on Wednesday of Mr. William Perry, an old resident of Wellington. The late Mr. Perry was at one time a sergeantmajor in the Torpedo Corps, and was an ex-vice-president of the Wellington Workingmen’s Club. A London cable says Captain the Hon. Alexander Ramsay (son of the Earl of Dalhousie and husband of Princess Patricia of Connaught), commander of If.M.S. Dunedin, which is coming out to New Zealand, has been appointed to command H.M.S. Chatham on the voyage from New Zealand to England. Sister Mary St. Felicatas O’Rourke died at the Kaponga Convent on Thursday. Sister O’Rourke was born in County Cork and entered the Convent 36 years ago. As an infant teacher she became endeared to her pupila and earned the respect of all who knew her. The funeral takes place at Kaponga at midday to-day, and Requiem Mass will be held at 11 o'clock.

An Ashburton telegram says the Rev. G. Miller, Dominion Moderator-elect, who recently received a cable to North East Valley, Dunedin, was the subject or. Thursday night of a resolution by St. Andrew s s congregation, which appointed two delegates to meet the Presbytery and state that the congregation was unanimous in asking that Mr. Miller should remain in his present charge. Mr. A. G. Mason, who for the past fourteen years has been on the staff of Messrs. C. C. Ward, Ltd., New Plymouth, is severing his connection with the firm to enter into business on his own account at Te Kuiti. On Christmas Eve the staff gathered together to farewell Mr. Mason, and Mr. Ibbett presented him with a solid leather suitcase and a travelling rug for Mrs. Mason. Reference was made to the happy relations which had always existed between Mr. Mason and other members of the staff, and best wishes were extended for success in his new sphere. Several members of the staff of the Government printing office have retired on superannuation after many years service. They are: Mr. J. S. Rutter (overseer of the book-binding department, 46 years’service); Mr. G.N. Sturtevant (chief draughtsman and overseer o? the photo-litho branch, 41 years’ service) ; Mr. W. L. Gibson (overseer of the Gazette and bills room, 41 years’ service); Miss A. H. O’Malley (supervisor of girls’ room, 34 years’ service); Mr. Maaon (.compositor, 23 years’ service) ; Mr. A. Dartnail (compositor, 20 years’ service); and Mr. F. H. Martin (compositor, 19 years’ service). They have been the recipients of presentations from the staff of the departments.

Mr. L. V. Caldwell, who recently completed 40 years’ service in the Post and Telegraph Department, is retiring at the end of this month. Mr. Caldwell joined the department as a junior at Waverley in March, 1883, and a few years later was transferred to Wanganui. His promotion to the position of accountant there followed in August, 1907. In October, 191'1, he was transferred to the money-order and savings bank branch of the Chief Post Office, Wellington, where he remained until April, 1919, when he was promoted to the position of district accountant at Wanganui. When in November, 1920, the position of accountant at Wellington became vacant, Mr. Caldwell was selected to fill it, and he has retained the position up to the present time.
