TUTENKHAMEN’S TOMB.

Interest in the discovery of King Tutenkhamen’s tomb will become much more widespread if London and Parisian dressmakers succeed in making “mummy” frocks popular. The name of the ancient ruler has already endured for more than thirty centuries, but with such a stimulus to women’s memory as is now proposed it would take on a new dignity that living monarchs might well envy. Much depends, of course, upon the manner in which the bright idea is received. Women appreciated their freedom when the loose, short skirts gave their limbs free play, and they may refuse to return to bondage—especially the bondage of “mummy” swathings. Cynics will be inclined to jeer at the possibility of. open rebellion. There is a belief in some quarters that a woman may defy any conventions except those set by the designers of the “latest” Parisian or London gowns. But worldly people realise that woman is a law unto herself, and if the thought of adopting an idea which came out of an ancient town at Luxor is displeasing, nothing is more certain than that it will not be adopted.
