RACING DESCRIBED. SOME EXCELLENT FINISHES. KEEN TUSSLE IN BIG RACE. (Notes by "Moturoa.”) Palmerston N., Last Night. The attendance for tho second day of the Manawatu summer meeting was fair, the weather perfect and the track fairly hard. Winners were not easy to p'.ek. Bonetteer scored a meritorious win in the big race. The eleven carded for the Kelvin Handicap went to the post. Dodo, with M. McCarten up, waa favourite, just ahead of Basso. Red Cherry, and Pirouette. Tht\ latter behaved badly at the post and was sent to the outside. Sensible broke through the tapes several limes, and the field eventually went off in scattered order. Dodo. Sensible, Red Cherry and Elmorz were the first to find their feet, but Elmorz led out of the straight from Dodo, Red Cherry and Sensible. Elmorz was well clear of Dodo, Sensible, Red Cherry, Highway and Basso going along the back. Three furlongs from home Basso met with Interference and dropped back. Elmorz came back to her field approaching the home turn, where Stream, Elothenes. Highway and Sensible drew up. Dodo fading away. Stream was In front at the distance, but was quickly joined by Sensible, and Red Cherry also put In a strong challenge. A fins race to the post saw Snowy Morris push Sensible home a winner by a bare halt length from Stream. Red Cherry was a similar distance away third, and Highway was fourth.

Sling Camp was withdrawn from the HighWeight Handicap, which was'regarded as very open. Empyrean, Bonibrook, Vagabond. Sir Roseberry and Santiago were fancied in that order. Santiago showed out from a good start, but Otauni Kid led Sir Roseberry and a bunched crowd passing the stand, with Vagabond and Empyrean in the rear. Otauru Kid was clear of Kawana as they ran to ths back of the course. Empyrean ran into third place four furlongs from home, where Vagabond was knocked back. Otauru Kid and Empyrean came into the straight together, with Santiago, Bonibrook and Sir Roseberry handy. Santiago and Bonibrook singled themselves out at tiie distance, and a fine finish resulted in Santiago's favour by half a length. Sir -Roseberry was a length further back, with Tag&bond almost in line. Last Crust declined his engagement in the Higliden Handicap. Geranial, ridden by Roy Reed, was a very hot order, but failed badly. Rene Mavis dashed off in front, followed by Geranial and a <trung-out lot. Rene Mavis 1 was still clear entering the straight, with •Millimetre, Ihapotoa and Waetea posing up. Millimetre challenged Rene Mavis at the distance and appeared to have her measure, but. aided by her light import, she lasted long enough to win by a head. Millimetre was a head in front of Waetea and Ihapotoa, who were almost in line.

Deucalion and Alaric were scratched for the Fiesident's Handicap, ten being saddled up. Mi Krtnball’s bracketed pair were heavily supported. and Marqueteur, Cold Steel, Crown Star, I’rintenipM. Little River, Admiral Codrlngton and Scotch Mixture were backed In that order. Ail moved off in line and raced for nearly a furlong without change. Little River then forged ahead and led Admiral Codrington and Kahikatea up the straight. The order w!Ls the same passing the stand, Marqueteur and Bonetter being well back. Little River increased his advantage racing to the back of the course, but four furiongs from home Admiral Codrington joined him, and for a few st! ides showed in front. Kahikatea was still third, followed by Crown Star and a bunched field. Little River drew out from Admiral Codringtun as they approached the borne turn, and Scotch Mixture was on the rails Crown Star and Print emps, both In the middle on the extreme outside, came fast. Marqueteur put in a good run on the rails, but failed to sustain it. Scotch Mixture and Bonetter were in line at the distance, but the latter drew away in fine style over concluding stages and won comfortably. Crown Star was a close third, Printemps was fourth and Marqueteur fifth. The Palmerston Stakes only attracted four runners, Tamatete, Rational. Gaillard and La Reve. Tamatete was, of course, a scalding hot favourite. Tamatete drew the rails, with Gaillard, La Reve and Rational on the outside. La Reve played up, and Rational showed disinclination to face the barrier. After some delay the tapes were lifted with Gaillard and Tamatete out first, followed by La Reve, with Rational, who was partly turned round, last. Gaillard was a neck in front of Tamatete at the end of a furlong, but the favourite raced hard, held on to the rails and easily left Gaillard. When given his head Rational came fast over the last furlong, getting to within three-quarters of a length of Tamatete, but the latter easily drew out and won by over a length. Gaillard, who tired badly in the straight, was a fair third, followed by La Reve, wno was outclassed. Tamatete came in for a rousing reception on returning to scale after winning his third Palmerston Stakes in succession. A dozen started in the Terrace Handicap, Cairo being the public choice, with Sunshot and Clandhu next. Clandhu led along the back from Cairo and New Moon. Cairo joined Clandhu three furlongs from home and the pair came into the straight together, followed *y Zero Hour. The latter assumed command at the distance, and ridden out. beat Clandhu by a length. Bayana was .a fair third, with Terry Singer and Cairo next. Cold Steel dropped out of the Himatangi Welter, leaving six runners. Alaric was an odds on favourite, Counter Attack and Happy Days also being well backed. Alaric, Bumptious And Happy Days were the first away and led out of the straight. Happy Days took command at the six furlongs post, with Alaric and Counter Attack lying handy. Happy days was just in front of Alaric, Askari and Bumptious at the home turn, and at the distance looked like winning. Alaric compounded when pushed, and Bumptious and j Askari flashed past, Bumptious winning by a neck from Askari, with Happy Days and Pant- ‘ ler next. . ! All the ten started in the Awapum Handicap. Martian Miss and Haigina carried the bulk of the Investments. Chimera, Good Sport .and Martian Miss were the quickest away. Good * Sport ran to the front at three furlongs, with

Chimera and Martian Miss next, and Haigina well back. Good Sport ran out at the bend, Haigina getting through, on the rails, <but the Hawera horse could net make use of his advantage. Chimera challenged hotly in the run home, but Good Sport, ridden right out, won by a length and a half. Santonin was a length further away, followed by Waipatu. STRATFORD MEETING.
