RACING CARNIVAL

HOLIDAY MEETINGS OPEN

BIG CROWDS EVERYWHERE

RECORD TJ.C. GATHERING

The holiday racing carnival opened yesterday with six big meetings and two (trotting fixtures. Beautiful weather prevailed everywhere, there were large attendances, and in most cases the totalisaItor figures showed an increase. The principal results are:— TJ.C. Handicap.—Karaeo. Auckland Cup.—Muraahi and Te Kara (jead heat. Manawatu Cup.—Mark Time. Otago Handicap.—Baldowa. Waipukurau.—Battle Knight. JVestland Cup.—Dutch Clock. TJ.C. MEETING. A RECORD ATTENDANCE. TOTALISATOR SHOWS INCREASE. . KARAEO WINS BIG RACE. The opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club Christmas meeting yesterday was favoured with fine Weather, and there was •a record attendance, the totalisator returns showing a substantial increase. From the point of view of sport the meeting was a district success, for the racing was very interesting throughout. Feilds were good and finishes close, whilst J»e fact that favourites was in the majority of the early races added to the public’s enjoyment. The Christmas Handicap was won by the Hawera owned Karaeo, whilst the open sprint went to the Hav.era owned Avola. _ The starting was in the hands of Mr. A. Vincent, and though he had a number of “green” horses to deal with the despatches Were very good. Mr. J. Cameron was in the judge’s box, and hoisted his decisions promptly and correctly, except in the opening race in which the numbers went up three times before the winning horse was recorded. Naturally there was a slight demonstration on the part of a section of the public, but the changing of the numbers quelled this, though many are still of opinion that the positions of the second and third horses should have been reversed. The rain of the previous days freshened the course, which Mr. J. Blewman had looking at its best, and though there were three falls during the day this was not any fault of the course. In the hurdles, Alice Montrose and Kiko Kiko fell, their jockeys (W. West and J. Simpson respectively) being somewhat shaken, but they were able to ride later. In the Tikorangi Hack Stakes. Lady Merriwee also came down, her rider (A. McCurdy) being considerably shaken. Stipendiary Steward Gordon was present and held a couple of enquiries during the day. After the Borough Juvenile R. Flower, rider of the winner, was fined £1 for going out with his gear not in proper order, and after the Steward’s Hack N. F. Johnson, rider of Kilcoo, was fined the cost of a losing mount for .crossing Jollv Gay. An enquiry is to be held this morning into the accident to lady Merriwee in the Tikorangi Hack handicap. Mr. L. Rea controlled the totalisathr, fand the staff had a very busy time, the Bnachine handling £29,959, as compared ‘with £23,574 for the first day of last □rear, an increase of £6385. All the arrangements that make for <he enjoyment of the public were in good mends. The musical programme was prorvjded by the regimental band under •Lieutenant R. L. Lowe, the catering was 'sn the hands of the Hygienic Bakery, and Ithe refreshment booth under the control |of Mr. E. Whittle. Mr. E. P. RACING DESCRIBED. GOOD DAY FOR TARANAKI. TWO BIG RACES TO HAWERA STABLE. (Notes by "Moturoa.”) Palmerston N., Last Night. Otauru Kid and Eonmark were always prominent, and took the last hurdle together In the run home Eonmark proved the best conditioned and scored nicely, though all out. , {Sir Roseberry was kept too far out. of it to i have a chance, but was running on strongly at the finish. Sling Camp was fourth. Conn- j try Life fell in front of the stand. Sir Rose- . berry looks well and will make amends before j the meeting closes. All the sixteen carded started in the Malden, i All Gold being warmly supported, and the only | others seriously considered were Road Hog and ' Sunshot. Koauau and Panim were quickest ■ away and led along the back. Bright Eyes headed them three furlongs from home and | led into the straight. At the distaiiee All Gold joined Issue, Bright Eyes farting away and | Panim, Heathcote and Koauau all being in line. Koauau was blocked, and All Gold went ; on to win nicely from Panim, with Heathcote ! a fair third and Koauau fourth. Koauau will ■ be all the better for the race, and should show , up during the holiday gatherings. Mr. Bruce ■Toll’s Sunshot ran up at the home turn, but was poorly handled and failed to run on. Cairo, Dodo, Merrimas, The Cheat, Kawana . and Semplice dropped out of the Welter. Vln- > dictive bolted six furlongs before the race. Moonstruck and Vindictive were the first away, ■■ and led along the back. The field bunched Jurltnas from but once in the

straight Basso drew out and won easily by two lengths from Red Cherry and Stream, which had a hard tussle for second place. Moonstruck was a close fourth. Pirouette, who v.-.is favourite, failed to reproduce her brilliant track form, and Elothencs, who was also well backed, ran badly. The winner was third favourite. All the horse.'* carded in the Cup went to the post. .Mark Time looked a picture in tho birdcage and went down well, being made favourite. Big money came for Mr. KembaU’s 1 racket and for Deucalion. Mark Time and Little River drew the best positions and took up the running from a splendid start. Megan rushed to the front entering the straight, and passing the stand was well clear of Mark Time, Little River and Helen Rufus. Megan still held command along the back, and four furlongs, from home Admiral Codrington ran into second place, Mark Time being given a breather. The field bunched at the home turn, Megan just being in front. Mark Time challenged below the distance, and though tacliled by Trespass in the last furlong, went on »' win nicely by nearly a length. Bonetter was \ close third and Helen Rufus fourth. Mark Time’s performance was a meritorious one, and the winner met with an enthusiastic reception on returning to scale. Bonetter finished well and will do better during the holidays. Deucalion shaped disappointingly, and Admiral Codrington looks stalp. Helen Rufus might be better in moderate company.

Paula and Dark Rosaleen were the only withdrawals from the Nursery Handicap, Mr. A. Alexander's Gaillard being a strong order. Gaillard and Bonideer were the first out, and showed the way to the turn, where Bonideer weakened. Siaosi came fast in the straight, but just failed to catch Gaillard. Solferange was a good third, followed by Bonideer. •Seventeen went to the post for the Gillies Handicap. Anticipate carried four figures, and Civility, Last Crust and the bracketed pair (Cushat and Millimetre) carried big * money. Last Crust and Civility began quickest, and led Anticipate, Millimetre and Ihapotoa into the straight. Last Crust dropped out below the distance, and Civility, Ihapotoa and Antif'pate had a great race home. Ihapotoa, finishing strongly, won. by half a length from Civility, with Anticipate and Millimetre close .up. Ihapotoa won well, and appears to have regained her best form. Rational and Martian Miss were the only withdrawals from the FitZherbert Handicap, fourteen lining up. Lady Fingers found most admirers, hut Halgina had a big following. Ladv Finger.* was fractious at the post, but eventually all left in a line. Halgina at once put a break on his opponents and Ifd along the back from Island and Lady Fingers. Halgina came into the straight with a good lead and won comfortably, completing O- Cox’s stable double. Lady Fingers finished fast, as did Waipatu. Island was fourth. Joy Ride, Kilbird and Bumptious were scratched for the Grandstand Handicap. A great betting race sayv Crown Star finish up just ahead of Alaric, Cold Steel, Counter Attack, Cleasanta and Happy Days. A splendid start, was effected. Counter Attack leading out if the straight from Cold Steel and a bunched crowd. Along the back the same pair were In front, with Pantier prominent next. Cold Steel ran up to Counter Attack at the home turn and ran in an easy winner from Cleasanta, which finished fast just in front of Crown Star. Pantier was fourth. SECOND DAY’S ACCEPTANCES.
