FIRE AT NAPIER.

BRIGADE PREVENTS SPREAD. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Napier, Last Night. Whilst many thousands of people were watching the Mardi Gras procession in the main streets this morning an alarm of fire caused a diversion of traffic to the vicinity of the post office, opposite which a two-.-torey wooden building was sending forth smoke and flamesThe outbreak was confined to the upper -torcy, which was completely gutted, and good work by the brigade narrowiv prevented the spread of the flames to other buildings, including the Clarendon Hotel. The sufferers through the fire are D. S. Laing and Son, indent agents, and Warren, Photographic Studios. The building is owned by Laing’s and is insured for £2500 and Laing’s stock is insured for £2OOO and his office and furniture for £3'7o. Warren’s stock and effects are covered for £450. All the policies are in the Hartford office. The fusing of a light wire is supposed to be the origin.
