GAMBLE OF GALLIPOLI.
TURNING POINT OF WAR. SUCCESS NARROWLY MISSED. By Teiesrraoh—Pres* Assn. —Copyright. Received Dec. *24, 10-30 p.m. New York. Dec. 24. The National Security League, which is conducting a discussion among military and naval man regarding Mr. Wins*nn Churchill’.? memoirs, has published the opinion of Major Lejune. commandant of the United States marine corps, •who agrees with Mt. Churchill that the battle of Gallipoli was the turning point pf the war. Major Lejune, however, states that a few thousand Allied marines at the psychological moment of the battle would have meant the taking of Gallipoli and the winning of the war. A general declares that the first attack upon the peninsula took the Turks by surprise. They fled and a small landing party could have captured the fortifications but the Allied fleet was obliged to steam away as it lacked marines, and when the fleet returned the Turks .were re-intrenched and re-strengthened, #nd the assault proved ineffective.
