THE TRAMWAYS.
BRISK HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. BIG INCREASES IN RETURNS. The tram traffic in New Plymouth during the holidays has been particularly heavy, the returns for Christmas Eve and yesterday (Boxing Day) showing a marked increase over the figures for last year. With the town full of busy shoppers the trams were well patronised every day last week, the returns showing an increase over the corresponding week last year. Christmas Eve, bringing streams of people to town, saw the trams busily employed, and yesterday’s big race crowd and the hundreds of visitors to the beaches, provided another busy day. On Monday a special time-table was in operation and the Christmas Eve bustle was reflected in the tram traffic. The passengers for that day totalled 15,382, compared with 10,597 last year, and the revenue amounted to £127 13s Bd, compared with £ll2 4s lOd on Christmas Eve 1922. Yesterday 9865 people used the trams and paid £9O 5s in fares, the figures for last Boxing Day being 6086 and £7l 14s 2d. A remarkable feature this year, as in past holiday times, is the complete absence of accidents of any kind, and the smooth running of a crowded time-table under different conditions. This is a tribute to the splendid work of the staff, all concerned giving their best efforts to ensure the satisfaction of the public.
